Muncie-Delaware County Receives Grant Benefiting Childhood Brain Development

Earlier this year, United Way of Delaware County—a BY5 Ambassador—was selected as one of 23 communities in the nation to receive a Vroom grant.

Vroom, with strong support from the Bezos Family Foundation, provides a smartphone app, posters, learning tip cards and many other materials to aid families in recognizing when their behavior is stimulating their child’s brain in a positive way. Through these efforts, Vroom strives to inform parents that they have the skills to benefit their child’s development.

"BY5 is excited to be partnering with United Way on the Vroom grant, which gives our community access to amazing resources for families to understand their role in early brain development. Because Muncie/ Delaware County has been designated as a Pacesetter Community, UWDC was invited to submit a grant for Vroom materials as well as be a part of the Bezos Family Foundation Learning Community. Providing positive family friendly resources for families is one strategy BY5 is working on as part of the community's comprehensive plan. The plan is being created as to how the resources will be disseminated, but we do know the first group that will receive resources are the "Family Navigators" to develop their resource "tool kits" as they interact, support and guide families in their day-to-day interactions. United Way is a great example of being a BY5 Ambassador, they help share the BY5 vision and find crucial ways in which they can support the work that BY5 is doing." - Carrie Bale, Executive Director of Muncie BY5

The Vroom grant is made possible to United Way of Delaware County as a result of Muncie-Delaware County's Pacesetter status from the National Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, which was earned for making significant progress in eliminating reading barriers faced by children in low-income families.

Locally, the grant will benefit children by funding opportunities and events that encourage parents to be actively involved in their child’s early brain development. UWDC and BY5 are eligible to apply for up to $10,000 worth of materials from the Vroom Store to use throughout the community because of the community's Pacesetter recognition by the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading.

You Can Make an Impact at Day of Action 2016

On Thursday, September 1, United Way will host its annual Day of Action, bringing together motivated volunteers from around the community, uniting to make an impact at partnering nonprofit sites, and bettering Delaware County as a whole.

Day of Action will begin with United Way of Delaware County’s Campaign Kickoff Breakfast at the Horizon Convention Center. Breakfast is free for all Day of Action volunteers because you make this day possible. After breakfast, volunteers will report to their designated nonprofit sites, ready to make improvements!

Volunteers have the opportunity to showcase their individual skill sets through indoor and outdoor painting, neighborhood cleanups, serving meals, reading to children, landscaping and lawn work, and office work projects.

Day of Action creates a unique opportunity for community members to give back to the nonprofit organizations who are working to better Delaware County each and every day.
