Come Discover First Place on Saturday, Sept. 28, a special event to introduce First Place–Phoenix to prospective residents and their families interested in learning more about this unique property for adults with autism and other neuro-diversities. The program runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and includes tours of our state-of-the-art property, staff meet and greets, testimonials, one-on-one information sessions about the apartments and Transition Academy program, activities and lunch. Fall Symposium in Phoenix Oct. 23–25

It’s not too late to register for First Place AZ’s semiannual First Place Global Leadership Institute symposium scheduled for October 23–25. National and international pioneering organizations and families are gathering in Phoenix to share ideas, learn from each other and hear from the First Place team as we explore strategies for developing more supportive and sustainable housing and community solutions. Join us for a full agenda of workshops, field experts, breakout sessions and invaluable networking. We hope to see you next month!

Upcoming SARRC Workshops Offer Valuable Information  

The Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC) is offering two complimentary workshops for families of children with autism or other special abilities who are searching for housing options and estate planning information. This month’s workshop, “Preparing for the Future: Special Needs Housing Options to Consider,” is from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21. “Preparing for the Future: Basic Estate Planning & Special Needs Trust Overview” will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5 with lunch provided.

Learn what inspires staff members each and every day as they work—and play—with residents of First Place–Phoenix. Our From the Team series introduces you to many talented, dedicated professionals who collaborate to make First Place home to adults with autism and other special abilities.

Farm Express Makes a Stop at First Place

First Place–Phoenix was recently treated to a visit from the Farm Express  mobile produce market supported by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona in partnership with Discovery Triangle Development Corporation. Residents and staff chose from an array of fresh fruits and veggies ranging from cantaloupes, grapes and local Gala apples to squash, tomatoes and lettuce. They also enjoyed $5 Blue Buck coupons toward their purchases. Launched in 2014, the goal of the Farm Express is increased accessibility to fresh, affordable produce as an opportunity for more healthy living.

Autism Advocate Shelly Dival Stresses Importance of Design and Architecture

The role that design and architecture play in the development of autism-friendly residential settings is critical to independence and well-being. Aussie Shelly Dival is a passionate advocate for individuals with neuro-diversities—and she just happens to be on the agenda for our upcoming Global Leadership Institute symposium October 23–25. Churchill Fellow and grandmother to a grandchild with Down syndrome and autism, Shelly is an expert in the development, design and architecture of autism-friendly spaces and places for her clients in Western Australia. The prestigious fellowship has enabled her to travel the world conducting research to “open up a global conversation to help facilitate change in our built environment to be more appropriate for those with autism.” As a symposium presenter, Shelly will talk about her field and fellowship research, as well as share insights on the key components of successful projects.
