This week is all about PURSLANE at the farm! What an incredible plant, it's taking over the farm!
Once I read in a book that you can tell a lot about your soil from what kind of weeds grow in it. It said that purslane is a sign is rich soil. Well, I guess that we have very good soil at Loutet because we are drowning in purslane! The little succulent is flowering and going to seed and I need help getting it out of here, so the amazing Leslie is organizing TWO weeding extravaganza this Thursday, August 10th from 10-12, and Saturday, August 12th from 10-12!
If you're struggling with this weed as well I suggest doing some reading about it on sites like this one, because turns out this ingenious plant can propagate itself in many ways and over crowd seeds and small plants.
Another very interesting thing about purslane, is that is it not only edible but also absolutely delicious! it tastes a little bit like lemon. On top of that, it's is the leafy plant that contains the most omega 3 fatty acids!
I think that purslane is a great example of the different between a plant that is cultivated on purpose for agriculture and a weed, there's nothing wrong with it, it's only a weed because it is growing where I want beets and carrots to grow instead.
We have so much of it at the farm that we will bag some up and give it for free to all the volunteers that come help weed it!
IMPORTANT: a similar plant named "hairy-stemmed spurge" is poisonous. Click here for more information.
