Keep Up With Us

CoMP Website

Dr. Montessori Says:

"When the child goes out, it is the world itself that offers itself to him. Let us take the child out to show him real things instead of making objects, which represent ideas, and closing them up in cupboards."

Welcome Back

- Ivory Coghlan, Co-President
Early in the summer, my oldest child, bored and missing her friends, sighed and said "I'm just going to think of summer as a long 'going out'."

Going outs, in Montessori education, represent a chance for children to learn as active citizens, and I wanted to harness that energy. Inspired by her attempt to make the best of the long break from our routine, I found a couple sketchbooks we could use, and tried to look at our daily chaos through a new lens. I asked the kids to take the helm, and our pages quickly filled with baseball ticket stubs, descriptions of the best cherries we have ever eaten, and a surprising amount of sand.

Each page was a step toward the end of summer, and back to the routine of our classrooms. Now that our long "going out" has ended, I know I am not alone in feeling that this summer both dragged and flew by. I am looking forward to seeing you all in the hallways, at events, and at CoMP meetings. If we are lucky, we will be invited on a couple classroom going outs as well.

What is CoMP?

You are! The Community of Montessori Parents is just that - the parents and guardians of current Montessori students. There are no fees for membership.

We have partnered with SPS for 30 years and our work has facilitated the expansion of the Montessori program from one class at Jefferson Elementary in 1986, to 15 classrooms at Spokane Public Montessori today!

CoMP is a registered, independent 501(c)3 nonprofit charged with the authenticity and sustainability of the Montessori program in Spokane Public Schools. CoMP also functions as the parent–teacher group and is always looking for opportunities to support our teachers, and improve the children's experience. We support over 400 students, ranging from kindergarten to 8th grade.

Our board of directors is elected yearly, and is an all-volunteer board.
