Dear Spinback Instructors,

Welcome to the inaugural Instructor’s Newsletter which we hope will provide you all with useful content as well as important updates, events and information regarding our studios. We don’t wish to bombard you, so these newsletters will be relevant rather than too frequent. We would also encourage your interaction, suggestions and feedback at any time for what would benefit you in terms of content, or lack thereof!  Any suggestions are more then welcome. 

Our 2nd studio is coming soon!
Scheduled to open end of October 2016 on Wuding Lu (near JiaoZhou Lu) The studio will have the same state-of-the-art technology, fantastic new Stages bikes, and with access to changing rooms and showers. 

We will replicate the current schedule to start with and add more classes as we move forward. If you are interested in instructing a class or 2 at the Wuding lu location, please email me and let me know your availability.

This will really help streamline the check-in, particularly as we move in to the new studio and increase classes!  Thank you in advance for your assistance.
14th October 2016 - The Evolution of Rihanna. Once again Jenn has prepared an amazing playlist with Rihanna's hits and videos.  
21st October 2016 - International Indoor cycling day: At Spinback, we will be showing our support by hosting a number of free classes that day at our JiaShan Lu studio. We are looking at having many classes that day, depending on your availability. Please email me if you can do a class that day and suggest what time will suit you best. We can start with a 630am, and have many daytime + evening classes.

29th October 2016 - Chi Fan for Charity spin at 12pm with all proceeds going to the Chi Fan for Charity beneficiaries (Educating Girls of Rural China and Shanghai Young Bakers).

31st October 2016 - Halloween Spin with some scary songs, music and videos. Talk to Jenn if you wish to be part of the fun :). 

Training & Refresher Updates:

During the Mid-Autumn Festival we held a New Instructor Training and Refresher course. We would like to thank those that were able to join for taking the time to ‘go back to basics’ as well as share experience and tips. In addition to this there are a few guidelines for Instructors that we would like your support in facilitating and promoting to ensure consistency amongst ‘Spinback Speak’ as well as our valued customers’ experience. This will be particularly important as we open our second studio in Wuding Lu in the coming weeks! Please refer to the full “Spinback Instructor Manual – September 2016” for full details and below for a summary.

  1. Introduction – this should be kept to 3 or 4 minutes during the start of the class utilising instrumental song where possible and only focus on the form ON the bike such as knees facing forwards, upper body posture, Rate of Perceived Effort %, RPM, Performance IQ, What to expect (bike setup is important but is taken care of by Adriana/Jenn/Anna as we welcome people to class).
  2. RPE (Rate of Perceived Effort), Resistance & RPM – all the R’s – it gets confusing not just for us, but for our Spinners too. Let’s focus on RPM and with resistance let’s all start using words like
    • Light – 50-65% effort
    • Medium – 65-80% effort
    • Hard – 80% above
    • This will become more important in the new studio with the Stages bikes which have the ‘lever’ and 3 shift settings which would translate well then for Light/Medium/Hard
  3. Mandatory (active) Recovery / Warm down.  This is just as important as the warm up!  At the end of each workout/playlist please start implementing a 2-3 minute song that will be used to conclude the workout in which you actively recover together and stabilize heart rates and bring Spinners naturally in to the cool down/stretch.  During this time, the music will not be turned down, and lights will remain off to help encourage our Spinners not to rush off the bikes either.
  4. Refreshers – we would like to do workshops at any time that you would like them!  Playlists, techniques, microphone practice.  You name it, we’ll do it!  Let us know what you want to work on or improve as an Instructor?
