Gone Home Former Chief Scout Eoghan Lavelle.

It is with great sadness that Scouting Ireland has learned of the passing of former Chief Scout Eoghan Lavelle.
In Scouting terms he was probably best known as a Sea Scout and served a number of terms as National Commissioner for Sea Scouts before being elected to Chief Scout (Scout Association of Ireland) where he also served two full terms.
Eoghan started his Scouting Journey in 5th Port of Dublin Sea Scouts Dollymount. Serving as Rover Crew Skipper where they undertook an immensely ambitious task to complete a Hydrographic Survey of the Malahide Estuary. The survey was so meticulously carried out it was adopted by the Admiralty for the Malahide Estuary.
Moving to the Southside of Dublin he was instrumental in the establishment of 8ú Calafort Gasóga Mara Scout Group and, as he was a fluent Irish Speaker and a champion of the language, the Group was established as an Irish speaking Group.
In his time he was Sea Scout Leader and Group Leader before taking up an honorary title as Cox’n.
He was a Trainer particularly of Nautical skills and he served on the European Sea Scout Committee. He was involved in all major Irish Jamborees and numerous national and international events in his Scouting Career.
He was an eminent Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, an extremely competent Yachtsman, an amateur Historian with a memory to rival Google and a humanity that touched all he encountered.
He had a great belief in Young People and was a champion of them and their causes. He once said of his role as Chief Scout, that he was the “Scouts' Shop Steward” and he was there to ensure their voices were heard where they needed to be heard.
On this sad day, that Scouting mourns a great loss our thoughts are with Lilo and the extended Lavelle Family, with whom we had the privilege to share the life of a great man.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a Anam dhílis.
