East Bay Eviction Maps, Trumpocalypse, and #GivingTuesday

Hope that everyone is doing as well as possible given the current political moment. We at the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project want to let you all know a bit more about what we're up to, as well as offer some thoughts and request your support in funding our monthly operating costs.

Unfortunately, in the very near future, we are going to have a real estate mogul president, whose billions have been made and inherited through systems that privilege private property and whiteness. Even Woodie Guthrie wrote a song about Trump's landlord father, Fred, in 1950, calling him out for racist housing policies

And now, Donald Trump has appointed a Chief Strategist who wishes that only property owners could vote, and a HUD secretary who overtly opposes fair housing law. Of course he also supports mass deportations - another form of racialized eviction.

Over the upcoming months, we hope to produce more maps and analyses focusing on intersections of private property racialized dispossession. For us, we want to produce this work with no illusion that things have been so great under the Obama administration, most recently made evident by the DAPL pipeline, again exposing the white settler violence with which the US is predicated. As Robin Kelley writes of the current moment, "Exposing whiteness for what it is—a foundational myth for the birth and consolidation of capitalism—is fundamental if we are to build a genuine social movement."

Counterpoints: Data and Stories for Resisting Displacement

In September, we released our new report on displacement and resistance in Alameda County with Tenants Together. If you have not yet seen the report, you can download it here!
Based on numerous datasets, the report maps evictions in Oakland, Fremont, and the City of Alameda, as well as forms of resistance taking place in each city. We look at data regarding Unlawful Detainers, the Oakland Rent Board, loss of Section 8 housing, rental increases, demography, and foreclosures, as well as narrative data in the form of oral histories and video work. Our interactive online version of the report can be found here.

Narrative Work and Community Power Mapping

As part of our work in Alameda County, we produced new oral histories for our Narratives of Displacement and Resistance Map, as well as new video work. Check out these amazing videos produced by Ariel Appel here!
We also converted our Community Power Map that had been up in the Betti Ono Gallery into an online crowdsource-able version! Now anyone can respond to our invocation, "What places in Oakland sustain you spiritually, culturally, and creatively? Help build the power of our community by contributing to our crowd-sourced map."

Also, check out this video by Rebecca Gourevitch documenting our Counterpoints event!

Once again, please consider donating to us on this #GivingTuesday so that we can stay afloat and continue producing maps, narrative work, and community events that elevate intersectional approaches to housing justice in the Bay Area and beyond!
