A request from Peter Reaburn:
Now living on the Gold Coast but still working for CQUniversity supervising 9 PhD students – the next generation of me’s! Frightening!
Would love you to help a university research project by both completing the 5-6 minute online survey and forwarding it to any contact lists you may have. It’s a survey looking at nutritional supplement use in masters athletes, as well as older exercisers and non-exercisers.
Myself, Dr Sue Williams and a Masters student from France, Gautier Peruchot, are undertaking an ethics committee-approved research project examining supplement use in masters athletes, and older exercisers and inactive ozzies.
We’d love your help in completing the survey and circulating this email to any friends, workmates or e-mail lists you may have. It took me 5 minutes to complete.
The survey can be accessed at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LX3R2B8
Please help us with this project by completing the survey then circulating it on via email of Facebook.
The survey closes Sunday 12th June.

Race Report - Fiji Triathlon Festival 27th – 29th May 2016 (continued...)
Need an excuse to get away to a tropical retreat - this is the one .
In its 4th year the triathlon festival run by 100% events includes, an enticer, a sprint and a long course (almost a half IM) as well as 750 and 1500 swims and 2.5 and 5 km runs and kids events . Something for everyone.
This was a well run event with plenty of local support and an awesome presentation dinner at the end . Being still quite a small event with a relatively tiny number of participants you would have to be very unlucky not to receive a medal of some kind. .
I managed to bring home 4 medals ( and a very nice towel ) . I participated in the 1500 m swim , 2.5 km run and the long distance - 2km/80 km/20 km .
The long distance had less than 30 competitors as well as a few teams and I was one of only 2 females who completed the whole of the long course.
So how did it go ? .
I stayed at the Westin hotel on the resort island of Denaru where the race was held . This hotel is famous for its comfy beds and I can vouch that the “ Heavenly bed” is the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in .
The events and transition were just across the road so very handy for access.
The race started at 7:00 am into the warm waters lapping the Denaru resort - The water is quite soupy here near the Port and the first 20 metres involved wading through shin deep squelching mud . Once past this the swim was flat and uneventful albeit possibly a bit warm for my tastes.
I was one of the last into transition so took the moment to chat and have photo opportunities (Jenny taught me this!) before heading out on the bike .
The bike leg was relatively flat and involved 3 legs back into the main township of Nadi and down the main drag and out into the picturesque countryside past villages , thatched huts , churches full of gospel singers and passionate preachers , and roadside fish sellers with lots of friendly “ Bula” greetings the whole way .
Being a Sunday most people were at church and the shops were closed.
The police and volunteers worked hard to keep traffic out of the riding areas although I came across a cyclist who had been hit by a car muscling its way past a policeman into the intersection. Unfortunately this threw me a bit and I ended up taking a wrong turn for 3 kms before being set right. There was also traffic jams , large buses and speed humps to add an additional challenge to the cycling experience.
Due to my wrong turn I was one of the last still on the cycle leg and earned a Police cycle escort back through town - complete with flashing blue light and siren. The race director was on his little yellow motor scooter behind me. Because of this I tried hard to put on the pace but this was probably a mistake – I made great time but was really exhausted for the run leg.
By the time I got to the run course - 4 laps of the golf course, the temperature had climbed to 37 degrees and I was struggling to catching my breath .Half of the course was shaded but there was about 3 kms of unprotected wasteland that sucked the soul . I started the course with a walk and gradually built to shuffles and walks from one aid station to the next begging for water and ice for most of the course. I made a mental game of trying to remember the names of the people on the aid stations to help me disconnect from the heat and desperate thirst. The support from the locals and the volunteers was fabulous. Eventually made it to the finish line in a somewhat embarrassing run time but hey - I was first in my age group!
The culmination of the presentation ceremony was fabulous with masses of food and drink and a display of dancing from the local boys which was a cross between manpower and traditional fire dancing .
A representative of the local Fiji triathlon association spoke about their pleasure in receiving a donation of some equipment and their hopes to have some representatives at the next Commonwealth Games . Fiji doesn’t have a bike shop so even things like spare tyres have to be brought in and many of the budding athletes come from poor families . It was with great pleasure that I was also able to donate my bike - on its last race – having been recently superseded , to the association for one of their athletes - a charming Fijian lass who had manned a drink station and had till then been riding a borrowed bike . She had been first in the swim race and had been in a team representing Fiji in the Pan – Pacific games . A win – win all round .
Apart from refreshing swims in the Resort pools, I added a snorkelling , an Island cruise , Fijian spa treatments , waterfalls, zip lining and some quad bike adventures to this fabulous holiday .
I would go back in a heartbeat.
Judy
