Welcome Jeff Topp to Hawkins Outfitters

There's a lot going on at Hawkins Outfitters these days. First and foremost I'd like to announce and welcome Jeff Topp to our guide team. Jeff is a twenty year veteran guide who knows the Manistee, Pine and Pere Marquette as well as anyone. He is a great guide, angler, and a fun guy to spend a day with. I'm pumped to have him on board. During the summer months Jeff leaves Michigan for Alaska where he is the Head Guide at Katmai Lodge on the Alagnac River. We have used Jeff for years as our go to guy for over flow. Jeff lives near Wellston, MI. Welcome aboard Topper!

Our guide team, Jon, Ed, Russ, Jeff and myself have a combined total of 94 years of experience guiding in Michigan. No one can top that!

The hatches have wound down, trout are beginning to switch to the terrestrial bite. This year has been the best trout fishing in recent years. Smallmouth are really heating up both in size and numbers. If you haven't given the tough guys a shot you're missing a bunch of fun.

Looking around the corner fall is waiting for us. We have very few fall days open. If you want a steelhead trip give Cherie a call ASAP or you will be disappointed.

Enjoy summer! Thanks for your support. See you on the water!

Recent cancellation  for Garden River
After being full all year the Garden River trip has just had a cancelation. I have up to 4 spots available on the Sept 25-27, 2016 trip. This is a Sun-Tuesday trip. It is the time that the steelhead and cohos usually begin to show in some numbers.

This is my 18th year guiding on the Garden River First Nation lands. I know all the secrets to catch whatever species is in at the time of your trip. I've walked the entire river many times and can take you to places not many anglers see. We will fish with floating lines and sink tips depending on conditions.

Cost of the trip including three days fishing, use of rods and reels, transportation to and from the river, lunch, and quality guiding is $995 per person. Not included are lodging, license, breakfast, dinner, flies or gratuities.

New protection for steelhead and other migrating species
All cold water trout streams, Types 1-4 are NOW CLOSED TO CHUMMING!
Chuck Hawkins, Brian Pitzer, Kevin Feenstra and lot of other concerned guides and anglers addressed the Natural Resources Commission last Thursday. We provided the commission with studies, internet data and antidotal evidence of the potential damage that could be done due to chumming. Dr. Bryan Burroughs, with Michigan TU was instrumental by comparing chumming to duck baiting which was outlawed years ago. Thanks to all that participated and thanks to all of you that contacted the DNR in regards to this issue

2017 Hawkins Outfitters Trip to Patagonia, Argentina
Hawkins Outfitters is again hosting a fantastic trip to Argentine Patagonia. March 18 to March 29, 2017. Fall in Patagonia is the very best time to catch large rainbows and browns. The fish are both resident and migratory and are aggressively feeding in preparation for winter. Browns to 30 inches, rainbows and brookies to 25 inches are all possible. 20-inch fish are common.

Andes Drifters will be our host and guides during this entire trip. Gustavo and his crew are some of the best guides I’ve used in Patagonia and will do their best to put us in position to catch many quality trout everyday.  Dries, nymphs and streamers will all be employed to capture the trout of your dreams.

This trip is two trips in one. The first segment is 7 nights and 6 ½ days of fishing based out of Spring Creek Lodge near Junin de Los Andes. The cost for this portion of the trip is $5,275, all-inclusive except airfare and gratuities.

The second part of the trip is a five-day float, four-day camp trip on the Limay Medio, the famous River of Monsters.  In addition to the chance at very large migrating browns we will have a shot at many large resident rainbows. During our time frame the famous Minnow Hatch is on. Migrating, spawning minnows create a feeding frenzy on floating minnow patterns. Rainbows 15 to 24 inches slam these flies presented on floating lines. It’s a riot; the fish are like small steelhead, hot, fat and mean.

The cost for this portion of the trip is $3,800.

You may participate in either or both trips. Cost is reduced if you do both trips to $8,375

Call Chuck at 231-228-.7135 to discuss the trip.

Thanks

New Ant Pattern by Chuck Hawkins
I've been experimenting the last couple of years with a new ant pattern. It's a very simple tie, I'll list the steps below.
  • Wrap black thread to the rear on a size 12 or 14 dry fly hook
  • Tie in a strip of black foam 3/16" wide on the upper bend of the hook. Cut the corners off foam to make it easier to tie in
  • Tie in 4 strands of peacock hearl and wrap it to the front of hook leaving enough room to tie foam down
  • Fold foam over top of hearl, cut to correct length, clip corners and tie it down.
  • Whip finish that head
  • Take thread and wrap it around foam and hearl body creating the two segments of the ant
  • Optional-tie in a small tail of calf tail sticking slightly beyond rear of the body, white or black
  • Tie in white round rubber legs on each side
  • Wrap dry fly hackle (either brown, grizzly or black) around the middle
  • Tie off and whip finish

I apologize for the lack of step by step photographs. Jon Ray is on vacation! If I get enough emails from you all we will do a step by step.

Send me any name ideas you have, it is still unnamed

This fly has produced for me on the Upper Manistee very well. Tie some up and give it a try

Thanks, Hawk
