Coaching Corner
We all want to provide our students with meaningful schoolwork that promotes learning of academic content.  Many of our students never get the chance to learn this way due to assumptions we make about their ability to be successful.  This fixed mindset is transferred to students who then succumb to this prophecy that they cannot be successful.  So how can we change this course?  Carol Dweck argues that change lies in shifting to a growth mindset which has been shown to be a strong predictor of increased motivation, grades, achievement, and test scores.  Many kids don’t come to us with this mindset but the good news is that it can be taught.  Here are just a few strategies to use in your classroom:

1.    Think about starting small.  Small student successes over time can have a great impact on mindset.
2.    Model effort and strategies for students and praise them when they successfully use them.
3.    Help students understand what mastery looks like and the process of getting there.
4.    Communicate your role in helping them be successful.
5.    Recognize and celebrate growth and provide clear feedback on progress.
6.    Work on developing your own growth mindset be analyzing your classroom structures and strategies.

Developing a classroom culture that encourages and celebrates learning is something that we can provide all students.  Contact me to discuss this topic further or to share strategies you use to support a growth mindset in your classroom.
