Regional Wood Industry Group looks to Potential Collaboration with Grow North Region

Members of the Wood Industry Group (WIG) from the Visions Northwest region held a preliminary meeting with members from the Grow North Regional Economic Development Corporation regarding ways the two regions can work together to grow the Wisconsin wood products industry. The Grow North Region includes, Forest, Florence, Marinette, Lincoln, Langlade, Oconto, Oneida, and Vilas Counties. Grow North has been actively engaged their own hardwood products initiative in recent years. As their organization looks toward next steps, both groups feel as though collaboration on projects could strengthen overall goals. A secondary meeting is scheduled for December 12th between the two groups.

Visions Northwest Seeks Funding to Support Northwest Wisconsin Flood Disaster Resiliency Project

Last month, the Visions Northwest Board approved submission of a grant application to the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) to help support a $596,500 Northwest Wisconsin Flood Disaster Resiliency Project. In 2013, a pilot flood resiliency study project was completed by the Northwest Regional Planning Commission (NWRPC) for Taylor County, Wisconsin, which demonstrated the potential impacts of historic flood events, pre-identified likely impact areas and assessed the economic impacts to communities, businesses, and residents. The study was incorporated into the county’s hazard mitigation plan and now serves as a point of reference to guide flood mitigation activities across the county, which in turn, improves resiliency. The Northwest Wisconsin Flood Disaster Resiliency project will replicate the process model developed under the 2013 Taylor County pilot project. The model will be replicated for the seven county area included in Presidential Disaster Declaration #DR-2476 which was impacted by historic flooding in July of 2016. The Economic Development Administration (EDA) has acknowledged that disaster risk management and resiliency planning is essential to economic stabilization and has committed $477,204 to support this Flood Disaster Resiliency Project. NWRPC has also committed $69,301 as part of the 20% recipient match requirement. Visions Northwest has submitted a proposal to WEDC to support this important project with the remaining $50,000 of the match requirement.

Visions Northwest, Northwest Wisconsin Workforce Investment Board (NWWIB), and Northwest Wisconsin Educators for Regional Development (NorthWERD) are pleased to announce the return of our Regional Insights on the Economy (RIsE) Sessions in the Spring of 2017. In 2016, our three sessions were dedicated to providing attendees with an overview of the economic status and trends as well as the opportunity to participate in a facilitated discussion regarding economic, workforce, and education concerns throughout the region. These informative, well-attended sessions were held in Siren, Ashland, and Phillips. Next year, we intend to host sessions in three different locations. Planning for these sessions is set to begin in January.
