RIsE Breakfast Sessions: Regional Insights on the Economy

Together with the Northwest Wisconsin Workforce Investment Board (NWWIB) and the Northwest Wisconsin Educators for Regional Development (NorthWERD), Visions Northwest has hosted two in a series of three breakfast sessions throughout the region. These sessions have provided an overview of the economic status and trends of the region and a facilitated discussion regarding economic development, workforce and education. We greatly appreciate the participation at the first two sessions and look forward to our final event in Phillips next week on June 9th at Northcentral Technical College. At our final event of the season, we will welcome Kurt R. Bauer, President/CEO of Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce as our presenter. For more information and to register, visit our website and click on "Register for RIsE" on the main page. Registration for this event closes on by  the end of the day tomorrow, June 2nd. Also on our RIsE Sessions webpage, you will find the presentations, information, and follow-up materials (once compiled) from each of the sessions.

Visions Northwest Tours Natural Resource Research Institute

Last March, Visions Northwest board members, staff from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC), along with a few additional guests, took a tour of the Natural Resource Research Institute (NRRI), part of the University of Minnesota - Duluth. Aligning with the main priorities set forth in the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS), Visions Northwest is beginning to explore ways to fully utilize the potential of our forests in Northwest Wisconsin by looking beyond traditional markets and products. The NRRI is working to develop innovations in wood use and create new wood products and processes and improved technologies essential for the viability of the wood products industry in the region. Following the tour, Visions Northwest members held a meeting with key staff from WEDC, Eric Singaas, Initiative Director and Don Fosnacht, Associate Director with the NRRI. All parties expressed great interest in forming a collaboration in the near future to work together to move an initiative forward. Visions Northwest Awarded Grant from the University of Wisconsin Center for Cooperatives
Last week, Visions Northwest was notified that a proposal for funding to assist in efforts to form a regional wood products initiative has been accepted by the University of Wisconsin Center for Cooperatives. The $4,950 cooperative forestry grant will be used to organize and plan meetings for a regional wood products collaborative as discussed in the previous entry above in this newsletter. Visions Northwest will work together with our partners to build this collaboration into a diverse representation including forest/wood products industry, state/federal agencies and organizations, regional economic development and academia. We appreciate the UW Center for Cooperatives interest in supporting our efforts!
