THE JANUARY 2017 NAVIGATOR
Hi everyone,

A Happy and Healthy New Year to you all, and welcome to our January edition of the Navigator. The year has started really well for us, with a record turnout for the Mickleham event on 8 January (...Race Report).

We are delighted to share with you our Tri-Adventure Youtube Channel with the Snapchat videos we have been capturing at the finish line.  We plan to gather plenty more content, so please subscribe to keep up to date. Over the coming months, I'll be putting together some short videos of helpful tips for Adventure Racers - the first one is already available, and makes the sticking on and removing of the seat post number as easy as anything, so make sure you click on the link below..

COMING UP …

Thursley Adventure Race
Thursley is the third, and final, event in our AUTUMN/WINTER SERIES of 6 events, so we'll be giving out Series prizes at the end. Winners will be calculated based on their best three results.  We're hoping for a nice crisp day, with loads of sunshine, and online entry is already open and entries looking good (read more...). Please note that, because of the numbers, we're using the Village Hall for registration, and the Village Cricket Club for transition and Start/Finish. The two are very close to each other, with the Village Hall being a very short walk from the Cricket ground.

CONTINUE SHARING THE LOVE!

Bring a friend and let us thank you!

The only thing we love more than Adventure Racing is new Adventure Racers! So, to all readers who've taken part in one of our previous events (i.e. since May 2015), we would like to offer you a 50% discount off the full price entry fee of an event of your choice if you bring along someone new to one of our events. This offer will stop after the Thursley Adventure Race which is on 5th February.

Quite a number of you have already taken advantage of this offer, so thank you for introducing new people to our great sport.
Once they've entered their event, just let me know by email, events@triadventure.co.uk and I'll arrange the discount or a cash refund. How simple is that? The only condition is that they cannot have taken part in one of our previous events.  This deal is only available up to the day before the event.

And if they're completely new to navigation and Adventure Racing, no problem! They can sign up for one of my Navigation Courses (click here)

New Mugs have arrived

I am pleased to say that the new mugs have now arrived and are available to purchase in our online shop.  These new map design mugs will make up part of the Series Prizes at Thursley. They will also be available to purchase on our event days.

Triathlon Show, London: 16-19 February

We've decided to exhibit again at this show, which is taking place at the London Excel, so come and have a chat with us on Stand TE10. We'll be selling our brand new Tri-Adventure hoodies, as well as our newly designed mugs.

Who wants to be a Volunteer?

Tri-Adventure is now well into its second year of operation, and we're gradually increasing our numbers. So, I'm calling out to anyone who would like to volunteer at the events. Your contribution will be valued enormously, and can be exchanged for an entry into an event at this stage.  Maybe you are injured and still want to meet the other Tri-Adventurers, or maybe you know someone who would like to get involved?

So, I'm looking for anyone to help with event registration, course marshalling, managing transition, race photography, setting out a course and then collecting in the arrows or CPs, etc.  It is an opportunity to share the passion with other enthusiastic members to increase participation in the sport of Adventure Racing. If anyone is interested, or if you know someone, or if you think your son or daughter would enjoy this kind of challenge, please get in touch email me.
Adam's Adventures

As you know, I'm never happier than when I'm in the outdoors, either putting on adventure races, or taking part in all types of activities. Last week, a group of us from Clapham Chasers travelled up to the Lake District to take part in a weekend of training and fun. The Scafell Pike photo above is from the trip which saw me bivi out alone at the top (the highest point in the UK) to catch the morning sunrise above the clouds.

This is something else I do. I am a fully qualified mountain and expedition leader, so if anyone wants me to organise a trip, however large or small the group, let me know and I'll put together a tailored package. I have led groups all over the world, including Everest Base Camp, Aconcagua, and Kilimanjaro, so just let me know email me.
A Run Idea ... Latest Update

Since the last report, we've experienced a lot of difficulties in trying to firm up a venue for this type of event. We know it's possible to organise these in the Surrey Hills, but there are a few operational factors which affect the viability of an evening event at this time of the year.

So, rather than just run one event and then stop until the Autumn, I've decided to spend the next few months finding and booking appropriate venues, with the aim of holding our first event in October, and then monthly until March 2018. The format will be as outlined in the December Navigator, and will include a Canicross option.

Watch the Tri-Adventure website - Night Runner for more details. The typical format could be something like:
  • Saturday evening
  • Registration at 16.00
  • Briefing followed by event start at 17.30 (medal for all participants)
  • Prize Giving at 20.30
Some of you have suggested we should put on such an event all year round - a Saturday evening run around a 5k or 10k course. Our original plan was to just do this in the winter months, as there are lots of these events during daylight hours. However, if this is something that would appeal, please let me know. I really would welcome as much feedback as possible, so do please email me me your thoughts.
RECENT EVENTS UPDATE

Mickleham Adventure Race - 8 January

A warm and balmy January morning saw our first event of 2017 taking place in the Box Hill area of the Surrey Hills.  We had our best turnout yet, with nearly 100 people taking part. We again had a significant number of first timers at the start line, and it was also good to see an increase in the MTBO event  (read more..).
Interested, but no MTB?

No problem!  We’ve teamed up with B1KE, who will deliver good quality Mountain Bikes to the venue for £30.  So, no excuses …   If you need a bike for one of our events, just let me know. CONTACT US.  More information about the hire details can be found here.

Navigation Skills Training
Improve your Navigation skills and start collecting even more Check Points by attending one of my one day Navigation Courses.  I usually run them the day before a Tri-Adventure event, with the next course being on Saturday 4th February, and I am also happy to run these courses for groups of 1-8, on a day to suit you, so just email me if you are interested. The feedback from those attending is excellent, and the application of the new knowledge is clearly evident the following day, as the participants tackle their maps with skill and confidence  CONTACT US.
Here is a quote from Tom O'Halleran, who attended a Navigation course in December:

"My wife organised for me to go on the Tri-Adventure Academy Navigation Training day as I wanted to learn about how I take my day-to-day running and learn the navigational skills needed for Adventure Racing. Adam was a great teacher, being able to tailor the day to concentrate on the skills I struggled with and taught me how to approach a race. He also taught me the core navigational skills everyone should have been taught at school. If you love the outdoors and want to know how to properly read a map you should take the course, even if you don't want to race, anyone who likes to walk should do the course to improve their map skills."
