THE APRIL NAVIGATOR
Hi everyone,

Welcome to all of you to our April Navigator, and especially to those who signed up to the newsletter at the National Triathlon Show earlier this month.  A lot has happened since the March edition, so here goes ...
Coming Up …

Mickleham Adventure Race
The last of our Spring Series takes place at Mickleham on Saturday 21 May.  Entries are now open for the Experience, Sprint and Trail events, so make sure you take advantage of the Early Bird offer, which ends on 8 May.

Please note that this Event is taking place on a Saturday.  It is part of our review of Saturdays as an alternative/addition to Sundays.

Looking Back …

Monthly Round Up …
We were back to our Sunday format on 17 April with an Event in Effingham, the scene of our very first Tri-Adventure event under my ownership (31 May 2015). And what a fantastic day it proved to be!

We were privileged to witness a most beautiful dawn as we drove to Effingham along quiet country roads at 6am.  The sun shone brightly all day and Leszek on transition even managed to get sunburnt on his head!

Turnout for the event was pretty good this time, with over 60 Adventurers making it to the start line.  Each of the categories was fiercely contested, and Rob Hardwick managed to collect 28 of the 30 Check Points available in the Experience category. Nice one Rob!  Race Report, Full Results and Photos are all available on the Results Page. There is also a V-Log from one of our competitors who took part in the Trail Event.

We had quite a mix of nationalities at this event, and one group warrants a particular mention: 3 guys from Singapore found us on Google, and used the Trail event as part of their build up for a race they are taking part in later this month in the Sahara Desert!  They certainly got the sun and the terrain, even if the heat wasn't quite of the same intensity!
Effingham Results:

4h Experience Male: Rob Hardwick
4h Experience Female: Laura Ashfield

4h Experience Pairs: Jared Coil/Richard Gentry
2h Sprint Male: James Brown
2h Sprint Female: Naomi Brewer
2h Sprint Pairs: Andy Jones/Karen Jones

2h Trail Male: Sam Reed
2h Trail Female: Ashley Mayr

Tri-Adventure at the National Triathlon Show!

We were at the National Triathlon Show at the Lea Valley Velodrome (the one used in the London Olympics) during 8-10 April.  An iconic venue for sure, and an interesting location for a Show.  We ended up with two stands, and really enjoyed introducing Adventure Racing to a lot of enthusiastic people.  Over 100 people signed up to our Newsletter database, and some put their money where their mouths are, and came along to Effingham!
Adam Completes 125M Devizes to Westminster

Over the Easter break was the 68th Devizes to Westminster Kayak Race.  134 Teams set off in quite wet and windy conditions to complete the 125 mile kayak negotiating 77 portages along the way in pairs. I stepped in to join Boris 36 hours before the start due to a sick team mate.  You can read my blog from our epic paddle over the 23h00m01s, positioning us 31st overall.  A superb yet very challenging event.

Whiteley Village and The Hurtleberry – Charities
We all enjoy many happy hours in the Surrey Hills, so it’s good to be able to team up with a couple of Charities, to help them raise money for very worthwhile causes.  It’s a real pleasure for Tri-Adventure to be asked back to run these events again this year.

Whiteley Village Races raises money for people of very limited means who live in sheltered accommodation in the Village.  We are organising a 5k and 10k run, 5k walk, and obstacle events on Sunday 5 June, and on line entry is already open.  There’ll be signed routes, and lots of fun can be guaranteed for everyone, so bring your family and friends along.

Similarly with the Hurtleberry, which raises money to provide for the upkeep of the stunning Hurtwood Estate.  Taking place on Sunday 4 September, there are off-road Sprint and Full Duathlons, a 10k Trail Run, and a CaniX option as well.  Unlike our usual Tri-Adventure events (which require navigation skills), these events are fully signed and marshalled, so there’s no chance of anyone getting lost!

Navigation Skills Training
Improve your Navigation skills and start collecting even more Check Points by attending one of my one day Navigation Courses.  I usually run them the day before a Tri-Adventure event, and I ran two of these this month.  I am happy to run these for groups of 1-8, on a day to suit you, so just email me if you are interested.  CONTACT US.

And finally ...

Everything outside is now bursting into life!  It was a real joy collecting the checkpoints after the event at Effingham - glorious sunshine, gardens full of early flowering plants, azaleas and rhododendrons starting to display their amazing colours, and carpets of bluebells in the woods.

So, let's see you burst into life as well by getting out into the open air in the beautiful Surrey Hills, and joining us at Mickleham on 21 May.  We look forward to seeing you there.

Well, that’s it for this month.

Yours in Adventuring

 Adam
