IAEA Meeting Discusses Optimizing Operation and Maintenance of Nuclear Power Plants
IAEA INPRO Forum Tackles Opportunities and Challenges in Small Modular Reactors
Representing ten countries with operating nuclear power plants, nuclear industry professionals, outage managers, operators, designers, vendors and regulators, attended a Technical Meeting on the Optimization of Operation and Maintenance Focusing on Cost Reduction.
With some 50 concepts at various stages of development and deployment around the world, the 17th Dialogue Forum of the International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles (INPRO), held in the Republic of Korea, focused on the opportunities and challenges related to SMRs.
Developing the First Ever Facility for the Safe Disposal of Spent Fuel   Experts Meet to Discuss Tools for Assessing Macroeconomic Impacts of Nuclear Energy
Following several decades of committed implementation of disposal strategies in Finland and Sweden, as well as cooperation in the development of a safe disposal solution, the first ever deep geological repository for spent fuel is being constructed in Olkiluoto, Finland.
Promoting cooperation through education networks is vital for preserving and managing nuclear knowledge, and building on these partnerships is crucial for meeting common challenges, experts agreed at a recent IAEA Technical Meeting on Educational Networks.
Nuclear Newcomers: Getting Organized for Success   Experts Review Digital Applications for Nuclear Knowledge Management Programmes
Installed with IAEA support, a dual ion beam facility, which enables two ion beams from different accelerators to be combined simultaneously, has been inaugurated in Zagreb, strengthening Croatia’s fusion research and expanding the global supply of facilities with such cutting-edge capabilities.   Using digital applications can help build capacity in efficient management of nuclear information and resources, and improve skills and competences of nuclear facility personnel, participants agreed at a recent IAEA Technical Meeting on Digital Applications to Support Nuclear Knowledge Management Programmes.
Spent Fuel Management: Four Decades of Research   Use of Operating Experience Strengthens Safety of Research Reactors
Almost four decades’ worth of research on spent nuclear fuel management coordinated by the IAEA is now available in a new publication. Behaviour of Spent Power Reactor Fuel during Storage, compiles relevant data, observations and recommendations recorded by experts on this topic since 1981.   The IAEA incident reporting system for research reactors (IRSRR) helps operators strengthen safety by enabling them to share operating experience from events, including root causes and lessons learned, the system’s national coordinators concluded during a recent meeting in Vienna.
