Join the Fight Against Breast Cancer!

Lower the Risk with Healthy Habits

Did you know that 85% of all breast cancer cases aren't hereditary? They're actually caused by factors like environmental toxins, unhealthy eating habits, and stress! Some factors we can control (like exercise), some are out of our control (like genes) and some are still unknown. By choosing the healthiest lifestyle options possible, you can be empowered to lower the risk as much as possible. The following risk factors are some great areas to take action:

  • No Smoking!
  • Smoking not only causes a number of other diseases, it's linked to a much higher risk of breast cancer in younger women. Smoking also can increase complications from breast cancer treatment like damage to the lungs from radiation therapy, difficulty healing post surgery, and higher risk of blood clots when taking medicines.

  • Exercise Often
  • Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight can be a key factor in breast cancer prevention. Exercise consumes fat, controls blood sugar and limits insulin. In one study from the Women’s Health Initiative, as little as 1¼ to 2½ hours per week of brisk walking reduced a woman’s risk by 18%. Walking 10 hours a week reduced the risk a little more. Going on walks is also a great way to incorporate family time!

  • A Healthy Diet
  • Diet is thought to be partly responsible for about 30% to 40% of all cancers. Choose a diet that focuses on eating a variety of nutrient-dense foods across all food groups to boost your immune system and help keep the risk low.
Making these and other healthy choices can lower the risk of many other types of cancer, too! Check out local community activities that support awareness and prevention, such as the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk in Tahlequah on October 25th. Invite family and friends to join the walk and wear pink for support! By taking preventative steps now, you are joining the fight against breast cancer nationwide.

Kicking Off Farm to School Month

Growing Stronger Together!

Every October, thousands of students, educators, farmers, food producers, food enthusiasts and advocates come together to demonstrate the growing importance of farm to school programs as a means to improve child nutrition, support local economies, and educate children about the origins of food.

This year’s theme, One Small Step, will highlight the simple ways anyone can get informed, get involved and take action to advance farm to school in their communities and across the country. Check out the 2016 campaign theme and read Farm to School Month blogs, and visit the resource database to see how communities around the country celebrate.

Here are some pictures of Roland schools getting a head start on building raised garden beds for their Farm to School Program!
