National Blood Pressure Education Month

Your Blood Pressure:  Let's Talk About Fundamentals

If you have high blood pressure, there are steps you can take to get it under control, including—

  • Ask your doctor what your blood pressure should be. Set a goal to lower your pressure with your doctor and then discuss how you can reach your goal. Work with your health care team to make sure you meet that goal.
  • Take your blood pressure medication as directed. If you are having trouble, ask your doctor what you can do to make it easier. For example, you may want to discuss your medication schedule with your doctor if you are taking multiple drugs at different times of the day. Or you may want to discuss side effects you are feeling, or the cost of your medicine.
  • Quit smoking—and if you don't smoke, don't start. You can find tips and resources at CDC's Smoking and Tobacco website or Be Tobacco Free website.
  • Reduce sodium. Most Americans consume too much sodium, and it raises blood pressure in most people. Learn about tips to reduce your sodium.

Here are other healthy habits, that can help keep your blood pressure under control—

  • Achieve and maintain a healthy body weight.
  • Participate in 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days of the week.
  • Eat a healthy diet that is high in fruits and vegetables and low in sodium, saturated fats, trans fat, and cholesterol.
  • Manage stress.
  • Limit the amount of alcohol you drink 
  • If you have high blood pressure and are prescribed medication, take it as directed.
  • If you have a family member who has high blood pressure, you can help by taking many of the steps listed above with them. Go for walks together or cook meals with lower sodium. Make it a family affair!
  • Check your blood pressure regularly.

Cherokee Nation Partnerships To Improve Community Health (PICH) Grant- Annual Partnership Report
The Cherokee Nation PICH grant aims to improve community health and reduce the burden of chronic disease by bringing multiple stakeholders to tackle major health issues in our communities. This will be achieved by putting proven strategies in place to reduce rates of death and disability due to chronic diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, lung cancer, and stroke. The three main strategies focus on increasing: 1) access to tobacco free environments, 2) access to healthy foods and beverages and 3) partnerships between community programs and clinical care.

Farm to School in action

The purpose of Farm to School enriches the connection communities have with fresh, healthy food and local food producers by changing food purchasing and education practices at schools and preschools. Students gain access to healthy, local foods as well as education opportunities such as school gardens, cooking lessons and farm field trips.  Farm to school empowers children and their families to make informed food choices while strengthening the local economy and contributing to vibrant communities.

Farm to school implementation differs by location but always includes one or more of the following:
  • Procurement:  Local foods are purchased, promoted and served in the cafeteria or as a snack or taste-test;
  • Education:  Students participate in education activities related to agriculture, food, health or nutrition; and
  • School gardens:  Students engage in hands-on learning through gardening.

Farm to School in action...continued

Commentary provided by Tresa Eagle, Public Health Educator
Zion Elementary is a rural school in Adair County.  They signed a Farm To School Policy three years ago.  They do mostly Ag in the Classroom projects which is a $300 grant.  Preschool Teacher Ms. Beth applied for the grant and got a few nice supplies for her classroom.  Public Health Educator Tresa Eagle was contacted by the school stating they were interested and wanted to start a Farm To School Project in the pre-school classes starting with Ms. Beth's room.  She gave her the Farm to School Supplies that Hillary Mead of Cherokee Public Health ordered.  They supplied red wagons and plants, calling it a mobile market.  The kids pulled the wagons out into the sun and water.  At the end of the day they bring the wagons back inside. They all did a taste test with the kids which involved Go Foods and Slow Foods.  Conversation included upcoming track meets and right kinds of foods they would need to help them be the most prepared.  The kids were very brave and tried all the vegetables that were brought into the classroom.  They are making plans for next year's curriculum and are very excited about new Farm to School Projects!

If you miss 3 races (that you sign up for) throughout the calendar year (January-December), you will forfeit your race privileges for the next 12 months.
