Unplug!

Limiting Screen Time

Aim for 2 hours or less recreational screen time!*

Take just a moment to view the people around you.  How many are looking down at their phones instead of interacting with others?  It's startling to see a group of people not paying any attention to the physical here and now. Instead, they are only in tune to what others may or may not being doing on their social network.  Many hours are wasted staring at phones, computers, and televisions.  Many of us do not quite realize how much of that time is being wasted.  Spring is here and what a great time to make the change of doing less with social media, and television and spending more time outside exercising and/or conversing with others.  It's not only more enjoyable, but also good for your overall physical and cognitive health. Need ideas on what to do?  Here's a list:

  • Ride a bike
  • Go on a nature hike
  • Turn on the music and dance
  • Read a book or magazine
  • Spend time catching up with your family
  • Take your kids to the park
  • Play board games
  • Walk, run, or jog
  • Start a journal
  • Play ball
  • Explore gyms in your community
  • Rollerblade

*No TV/Computer under age of 2, 1 hour of educational TV/Computer between ages 2 and 5, is recommended.

PICH

Cherokee Nation Partnerships To Improve Community Health (PICH) Grant- Annual Partnership Report
The Cherokee Nation PICH grant aims to improve community health and reduce the burden of chronic disease by bringing multiple stakeholders to tackle major health issues in our communities. This will be achieved by putting proven strategies in place to reduce rates of death and disability due to chronic diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, lung cancer, and stroke. The three main strategies focus on increasing: 1) access to tobacco free environments, 2) access to healthy foods and beverages and 3) partnerships between community programs and clinical care.

March PICH Partnership Meeting Held

Over 35 Cherokee Nation PICH grant partners gathered in Tahlequah, OK, on March 8th, 2016 for a day-long partnership meeting.  Partners in collaboration with the Cherokee Nation Community Health Program are working diligently on implementing community and school based health projects that are making the healthy choice the easy choice for all families in the Cherokee Nation.  Partners got updates and shared resources to support current grant collaborative efforts, gathered input on how to create an effective vision for sustainability, learned how to coordinate successful Farm to School relationships from community panelists, developed and strengthened skills for leading coalitions, and developed talking points to help coalition members communicate effectively with community members, partners and stakeholders. The next PICH Partnership meeting will be July 26th, 2016 at the Tahlequah Municipal Armory Building.
