1LoveMalvern (a.k.a Malvern Neighbourhood Action Partnership (MNAP)) is a collaborative of residents, agency members and other stakeholders that strengthens the various communities within Malvern. 1LoveMalvern achieves community transformation by building community capacity, developing innovative initiatives, leveraging new resources and providing opportunities for local residents to receive training, improved access to services, and an increased voice in shaping their community.

Don't forget to RSVP on the eventbrite link provided in the Current News section. It is a great opportunity to reconnect with fellow agencies in the area while also meeting new groups in the community. 
Next 1LoveMalvern meeting
 
Since Malvern Partners Meet & Greet will be in March, the regular monthly meeting (originally scheduled for March 15) will not happen. The next monthly meeting will be in April. Learn more about key areas that Malvern is working on, including food security, youth justice, community safety, employment and education. Contribute your ideas and energy to tackle the community issues that matter to you.

Current News & Issues
Malvern Partners Meet & Greet
 
Malvern Partners Meet & Greet is in two weeks on March 8, 2016 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Toronto Public Library - Malvern Branch. It will be an evening of mix & mingle, new collaborations and an opportunity to exchange exciting ideas! The event is open to those interested in getting involved (or more involved) in the Malvern community of Scarborough.

Invited organizations include social service agencies, arts organizations, grassroots groups, educational institutes, local schools, faith groups & more. Take advantage of this evening and meet key players in the area to discuss projects & potential collaborations! 

The evening entails 5 minute micro-pitches by agencies, mix & mingle, a participatory installation & dinner. Participants are encouraged to attend for a minimum of 1.5 to 2 hours to ensure you can connect to everyone you want to.

Scarborough Transit Plan

As Scarborough's transit plan continues to be debated, community members will have an opportunity to learn more about the updated transit plan. There is still one more information session to participate in:

Saturday February 27th, 9:30am - 11:30am
Scarborough Civic Centre, 150 Borough Drive

Youth Programming, Engagement & Youth Justice News
Malvern Youth Justice Forum
 
Following up from the youth consultation in December, Youth Speaks, the youth justice forum is currently being designed in consultation with youth workers from all the agencies around here. If you would like to provide your input to shape this event, please contact Samantha at youthengagement.mnap@gmail.com.

Food Security & Resident Engagement News
 
Community Lunch  being renamed into Malvern Eats! 
 
Last week's community lunch hosted around 70 residents with participants receiving information on Toronto Hydro's SaveOnEnergy Home Assistance Program and TAIBU's Ubuntu Village program. The next meal, known as Malvern Eats, will be on March 3, 2016 from 11:30 to 1:30 pm at TAIBU CHC27 Tapscott Rd - Unit #1. The coordination of the meals will be led by Muslim Welfare Centre and TAIBU, with support and help from 1LoveMalvern Food Security and Resident Engagement workgroup.

A volunteer orientation will be hosted today February 25 at 5:00 to 6:30 pm at TAIBU CHC.  If you would like to sign up for the orientation or if you have any questions regarding the meals,

1LoveMalvern Food Security/Resident Engagement Workgroup & ANC Revitalization workgroups
 
As part of sustainability plans to keep food security projects going beyond the funding limits, the two workgroups involved in food security, 1LoveMalvern Food Security/Resident Engagement & ANC Revitalization Workgroups are merging together, starting in March. If you are a resident or agency representative interested in food security & resident engagement initiatives, join this workgroup to take part in projects and meet other community members working to push forward food security in Malvern. The workgroup meets once a month and works on initiatives that impact the community. Current initiatives include Community Meal & Service Provider Information; Food Procurement; Malvern Catering Network.

Spot-On Employment Services for Youth
 
On-Track Career and Employment Services has taken on a lead role in animating the space at The SPOT and have hosted several employment related sessions over the past few months. There is one more upcoming session, as listed below:

Self Employment Resource Guide

2015 saw many accomplishments by the ILLMP workgroup, including the very successful Youth Service Provider Forum. Another success was the release of ths the Self-Employment Resource Guide by the self-employment subgroup. The guide lists resources and services located in Scarborough. You may download the guide here and share it within your networks.

Summer Jobs & Volunteering Info Session at IIT

Islamic Institute of Toronto (IIT) invites youth to attend an info session on February 27th 1:30 PM at 1630 Neilson Rd on summer jobs and volunteer opportunities to gain valuable work experience and expand your network for the future. Vegetarian Cooking Class at Philadelphia SDA

This weekend, over 15 Malvern residents attended Philadelphia Seventh Day Adventist Church's Vegetarian Cooking Class, open to the community. Participants went through the steps or making several vegetarian breakfast items and enjoyed the class, delivered by a nutritionist. Stay tuned for a future class, likely to focus on vegetarian dinner items. For more information, you may contact the church directly at 416.286.3209.

150 Youth Voices Celebration Choir at Malvern Methodist Church 

Malvern Methodist Church  is one of the host sites for Hopeworks Connection's signature program - Toronto Children`s Concert Choir. As part of HWC`s 15th anniversary celebrations they have embarked on an ambitious project to create a 150-voice community Celebration Choir to join their sister choirs from Detroit, Memphis and Jamaica on stage at their annual concert on June 4th at St Lawrence Center for the Arts. The plan is to recruit children 7 to 18 yrs of age from satellite locations, one of which is Malvern Methodist Church. Rehearsals are held every other Saturday beginning in February 10:00 am to 1:30 pm, and  the Church will also provide a healthy snack and homework help. Parks & Recreation Facilities Master Planning Town Halls
The City of Toronto is developing a 20-year plan to guide decision-making and investment in facilities such as community centres, sport fields, pools, ice rinks, and bike/skate parks.
 
Several info sessions have already passed, the upcoming sessions are listed below:

Scholarship Opportunity for TCH residents


The Investing in Our Diversity Scholarship program for Toronto Community Housing (TCH) is for residents under the age of 25 entering post-secondary education or training. The program offers upto $4,000 in scholarship to cover tuition fees for the first year of post-secondary education or training and opportunities for scholarship in the second year too. Newcomer Youth with Disabilities for Research Study

A University of Toronto PhD candidate is seeking participants for a research study exploring pre- and post-migration experiences of immigrant youth with disabilities. If you know anyone interested, please pass on this poster and/or this script for some more detail to share with other agencies. 
 
Settlement Services for Newcomers

Through Catholic CrossCultural Services' SEPT Program, new settlement services are available for newcomer students and families every Monday at Lester B Pearson CI. Empringham Neighbourhood Association Workshop Needs

Empringham Neighborhood Association is a newly formed resident group in Malvern. Elder Abuse Discussions

Dorset Park Community Hub will be celebrating Chinese New Year to welcome the Year of the Monkey but also use this opportunity to discuss a topic few families are discussing, elder abuse. TCDSB Community Use of Schools Program
 
The Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) invites community agencies to apply for their Community Use of Schools (CUS) program – Focus on Youth (FOY). This program offers subsidized space from July 5—August 12, 2016. Additionally, TCDSB’s FOY program employs TCDSB students aged 16-18 to work with and support not-for-profit organizations during the summer. Deadline to apply for the program is March 4, 2016.

Energy Assistance Program 
 

The saveONenergy HOME ASSISTANCETM program is aimed at reducing the energy burden for those in need. Eligible housing providers, which include non-profit housing providers, co-operative housing providers, shelters and transitional housing, may receive free energy efficient upgrades to their homes or apartments based on the result of a free Home Energy Assessment. Social housing tenants are automatically eligible for participation in the Home Assistance Program. Eligible upgrades include new energy efficient light bulbs, new appliances and more. Settlement Pathway for Privately Sponsored Refugees
 
The attached flowchart, prepared by Toronto South LIP and Woodgreen Community Services, is a great resource for private sponsors to help figure out the pathway the incoming refugees will follow over the next four years.
