Food Security & Resident Engagement News

Mobile Food Market's popularity grows in Malvern!

On Wednesday, July 29th, FoodShare brought in a larger, refrigerated truck to keep produce cool on a hot, blistering day. Resident volunteers spoke to new community members, helped shoppers with their purchases and made delicious smoothies using the bicycle blender. The 10 cent apples were a hit with the kids! Market goers took home fresh lettuce, tomatoes, cilantro, sweet potatoes, corn, grapes, cantaloupe and more.

Are you from the Empringham community? Interested in doing some youth & children's activities. We are looking for residents interested in engaging youth in health and nutrition based activities during the market. We are also, looking for volunteers to outreach and spread the word about the market in the community.

FoodShare works with residents to increase access to fresh fruits & vegetables in communities where accessibility is an issue. During the fall & winter months, customers can expect to purchase food indoors, at the Empringham H.O.P.E Centre, Unit #212. For a bit of background, check out FoodShare's website.

Over the summer, the market will run every Wednesday at 110 Empringham Drive Basketball Court from 6:15 PM to 7:45 PM. For more details on the market, check out the flyer or contact Wynette at 416.284.4184 ext 222 or residentengagement.mnap@gmail.com

Neighbourhood Partnership News
Malvern Skateboard Park makes the Toronto Star!

Over the years a local skateboard club emerged at Lester B. Pearson CI with the support of 42 Division community officers as well as supportive teachers. Malvern Family Resource Centre and Action for Neighbourhood Change began engaging this group a few years ago and identified the Malvern Recreation Centre (City of Toronto) as a partner in providing indoor space for this initiative in one of the two indoor ice rinks.  As we begin to strengthen this partnership in the community and build more opportunities for skateboarding and cycling take a look at the article linked here!
