1LoveMalvern (a.k.a Malvern Neighbourhood Action Partnership (MNAP)) is a collaborative of residents, agency members and other stakeholders that strengthens the various communities within Malvern. 1LoveMalvern achieves community transformation by building community capacity, developing innovative initiatives, leveraging new resources and providing opportunities for local residents to receive training, improved access to services, and an increased voice in shaping their community.

It’s officially Fall! Which means the start of tonnes of opportunities and programs for everyone. Take a look through this newsletter for opportunities for youth, adults, single parents and families. There are lots of professional development and training available through the various agencies, several community events, and some advocacy work happening around Scarborough.

Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre handed over to UTSC and City of Toronto

The Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre was officially presented to the University of Toronto Scarborough and City of Toronto on Tuesday, Sept. 22. Previously known as the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House, the centre was the largest sports facility built for the Games and the largest investment in Canadian amateur sport history. Public Meeting for Navigating the Refugee Sponsorship System

The purpose of this meeting is to provide Torontonians with information and tangible action plans around how to assist people impacted by the ongoing refugee crisis. Information will be provided on how to get involved with the various initiatives currently taking place in Toronto or where to obtain the necessary information.

The meeting will be held on Sunday, September 27 from  2 PM to 4 PM at City Hall, Council Chambers and Members' Lounge, 100 Queen Street West



Scarborough Councillors hear need for driveway 'apron' parking
Scarborough councillors are hearing growing need for 'apron' parking on streets with lack of overnight parking options. Read the full story here. 
Plight of Canadian Renters

The Canadian Rental Housing Index brings together all types of rental accommodation, including social housing, purpose-built rental, condos, houses and secondary suites in homes across all 338 federal ridings in the country.

According to the index, 40% of renter households are paying more than 30% of their before-tax income on rent and utilities, an amount widely considered to be unaffordable. Read about it here.

NPower Canada, a project under Ryerson University's Diversity Institute and On-Track Career and Employment Services are partnering to host an information session at The SPOT to discuss a free IT training program being launched in January 2016.

Food Security & Resident Engagement News

Free Community Meal 
The 1LoveMalvern Food Security Workgroup in partnership with 5N2 Soup Kitchen and Malvern Presbyterian Church hosted another community meal at Malvern Presbyterian Church - 1301 Neilson Rd today September 24 from 12 noon to 1:30 PM. A hot meal, along with information services from local service providers was provided to participants.

1LoveMalvern is actively looking for donations to continue this initiative. If you would like to provide refreshments or sponsor future meals, contact Wynette Tavares at

Daily Bread Food Bank's Annual Report on Hunger 

Daily Bread has published their annual report on Hunger in Toronto. It reveals that food bank usage has increased in Toronto's inner suburbs by 45% and overall usage of food banks across the city has risen by 12% since 2008. Read through the report here.

Mobile Food Market
FoodShare's mobile food market continues to build clientele in the Malvern area. They are bringing in lots of veggies essential to South Asian and Carribean cooking. Stop by and take a look. They are here every Wednesday at 110 Empringham Drive Basketball Court from 6:15 to 7:45 PM.

The 1LoveMalvern website is being used to streamline all online presence for 1LoveMalvern activities and everything related to MNAP will be shared online under the 1LoveMalvern umbrella.

Please tag 1LoveMalvern Facebook page on any of your online postings and tag @1lovemalvern Twitter on your tweets to promote upcoming events and any community updates as we are trying to reach out to as many people as possible through these platforms.
Youth Service Providers Forum

A professional development day for youth service providers has been developed by the North Scarborough Integrated Local Labour Market Planning Committee on Oct 6th from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM at 325 Milner Ave, 9th Floor.
The day brings several youth service providers together to provide panel presentations and discussions.  The main topics covered will be Education, Employment, Health and Legal services.

Single Parent Employment Resource Fair

At this event you can expect to:

  • Learn about employment and child care resources available for single parents
  • Identify your career directions
  • Opportunity to speak with agency staff and employers

Take Back the Night
In solidarity with the "Black Lives Matter" campaign, Malvern Family Resource Centre's Women's Place will be hosting a rally on Friday, September 25 at the Malvern Library from 6pm-8pm. This will be an opportunity for women to stand together against violence, sexual assault, harassment, injustice and inequality across our city and the world.

Malvern All Candidate Debates
Two all-candidates debates will be held in Malvern, covering both the  Scarborough-Rouge River and the North Scarborough ridings. The Scarborough North debate will be taking place on October 1, and the Scarborough-Rouge River on October 8. Click here for the poster.

Smoking Cessation Clinic
A Place for You is a new, non-for-profit, health promotion organization that has opened its doors in Malvern where Individuals can access services such as counselling for people with diabetes, regular blood pressure check-ups, and many other services.
