1LoveMalvern Newsletter

1LoveMalvern (a.k.a Malvern Neighbourhood Action Partnership (MNAP)) is a collaborative of residents, agency members and other stakeholders that strengthens the various communities within Malvern. 1LoveMalvern achieves community transformation by building community capacity, developing innovative initiatives, leveraging new resources and providing opportunities for local residents to receive training, improved access to services, and an increased voice in shaping their community.

1LoveMalvern, with the support of all its community partners, has wrapped up the year with several interesting events including Community Speaks, a series of community lunches and a special Holiday Community Meal, and a series of youth consultations. The team would like to thank everyone for participating in the events, trainings and workshops this past year. The new year promises to be filled with exciting initiatives and will start off with the Partners Meet & Greet to provide a platform for different groups to meet and discuss collaborations for the coming year. 
Next 1LoveMalvern meeting
Learn more about key areas that Malvern is working on, including food security, youth justice, community safety, employment and education. Contribute your ideas and energy to tackle the community issues that matter to you.

Upcoming Malvern Partners' Meet & Greet

Community partners - mark off your calendars! On January 19, 2016, 1LoveMalvern will be starting off the year by hosting a partnership forum to provide space to make new connections with agencies in Malvern, residents, grassroots groups as well as institutions and organizations outside of Malvern. Participants will have an opportunity to present their ideas and upcoming projects to discuss potential partnership opportunities. Venue TBD.

Youth Programming, Engagement & Youth Justice News
Malvern Youth Consultation
Yesterday December 17th, 1LoveMalvern invited over 35 youth for an evening of consultation to discuss challenges they face at home, school, in the community and in social settings. Youth workers from various agencies including Parks, Forestry & Recreation, Toronto Public Library, Malvern Family Resource Centre and UTSC united to run small group discussions and larger group activities to understand their daily challenges. Results from these discussions will be used to design a Youth Justice Forum in Spring 2016. If you would like to participate or get more information about this event, please contact Samantha Wright at 
Food Security & Resident Engagement News
Community Meal & Service Providers Connection Update 
Yesterday on December 17th, 1LoveMalvern hosted its holiday community meal and served over 60 community members at Malvern Presbyterian Church - 1301 Neilson Road. The meal and giveaways were sponsored by On-Track Career and Employment Services with On-Track employees serving the meal. The dishes were prepared by local chef Sabrina Sookhansingh who has had residents asking for recipes for some of the items. Residents were able to connect with staff from Toronto Public Health, Julliette's Place, On-Track & Malvern Family Resource Centre.

FoodShare Mobile Food Market - Holiday Break 
FoodShare Toronto have been bringing in fresh fruits and vegetables into Malvern, with the help of Empringham resident volunteers.  The indoor market runs every Wednesday evening, from 5:15pm - 6:30pm at the H.O.P.E Centre, 110 Empringham Drive, Unit #212. but is on a break for the holidays and will reopen on January 13, 2016. 1LoveMalvern Food Security/Resident Engagement Workgroup
Are you a resident interested in food security & resident engagement inititatives. If so, join our workgroup and meet other residents working to push forward food security & resident engagement in Malvern. Workgroup members meet on the last Tuesday of each month, and work on several initiatives that impact the community. Some of the current initiatives are: Community Meal & Service Provider Information; Food Procurement; Malvern Catering Network. Spot -On Employment Services for Youth

On-Track Employment and Career Services has stationed drop in employment services for youth aged 15- 29 Mon to Fri 9 to 3 PM at the SPOT- 30 Sewells Rd. Services include resume critiques, interview skills, job developer services and much more.

To encourage postive branding for Malvern, the 1LoveMalvern website is being used to streamline all online communications. Everything related to MNAP will be shared online under the 1LoveMalvern branding.

Earlier this year, the self-employment subgroup had released a very resourceful guide for self-employed individuals in Scarborough. The guide lists resources and services located in Scarborough. You may download the guide here and share it within your networks.

Open Dialogue on Vulnerability

As the second anniversary of the 2013 Ice Storm approaches, the City is exploring lessons learned and steps being taken to improve responses. This session is geared to those who would like to learn more about emergency preparedness, including community engagement and the development of social safety networks to support Toronto’s most vulnerable. Register here for the event, tomorrow December 18, 2015 from 9 am to 12:30 pm -  the event is free and open to all community members.
Community Holiday Dinner

Philadelphia Seventh Day Adventist Church is hosting a Community Dinner on Thursday December 24, 2015 and is inviting all community members to attend. Entertainment, activities and gifts accompany the dinner, which runs from 6 to 9 PM at 65 Grand Marshall Drive. For more information, contact Download the flyer for more details.
Syrian Relief Work

Muslim Welfare Centre is coordinating efforts to ship supplies to help out the refugees. Recommended food items to donate include rice, lentils, canned vegetables, baby formula, cooking oil, tea bags, pasta, dry milk, cereal, flour, sugar, cookies. In addition, winter items are also being collected to help them through the harsh winter months, these include coats, sweaters, socks, sleeping bags. Your agency can also be a collection point for these supplies. To arrange that, please contact Firaaz Azeez at 416.754.8116. 

City's Parks, Forestry & Recreation Facilities Master Plan Survey
Parks, Forestry & Recreation is developing a 20-year Facilities Master Plan to guide decision making and investment in parks and recreation facilities and is asking residents to help plan for the future of parks and recreation facilities in Toronto by completing this survey.
Empringham Neighbourhood Association Workshop Needs

Empringham Neighborhood Association is a newly formed resident group in Malvern. They are looking for agencies to provide workshops and trainings for their residents in the areas of financial literacy, health and education. Arabic Language Services Survey

Toronto East Quadrant Local Immigration Partnership (TEQ LIP) is conducting a survey of services that are offered in Arabic. This information will help refugee sponsor groups refer their sponsored families and individuals to places that can help them in Arabic. If your agency provides services in Arabic, please fill out the following survey to help create a comprehensive database.

Discovering Your Options: Youth Employment Services

Spot-On Employment will host a fun filled interactive event for high school students on February 12, 2016. 11 to 2 PM at The SPOT - 30 Sewells Rd. This is a P.A day for public and Catholic high school students. and they will be treated to pizza, refreshments, and a variety of Career Assessments to help them discover more about themselves.


These Assessments will help youth gain better insight into their strengths, abilities, interests, and values. Please see flyer for more details


Scholarship Opportunity for TCH residents

The Investing in Our Diversity Scholarship program for Toronto Community Housing (TCH) is for residents under the age of 25 entering post-secondary education or training. The program offers upto $4,000 in scholarship to cover tuition fees for the first year of post-secondary education or training and opportunities for scholarship in the second year too. Applications are due by March 23, 2016 at 5 PM. Information sessions around this opportunity are being held at the TCH head office (931 Yonge St) on January 16, 2016 from 10 am to 1pm, and January 16, 2016 from 3 pm to 6 pm.
