The Girls Play Sports Festival was an amazing afternoon!   Over 200 fifth grade girls from Evanston elementary schools took the bus from their schools to ETHS, had lunch with the ETHS female student athletes and spent an afternoon playing 3 sports of their choice (one from each season).  The goals of the GPS Festival are to show girls that it is great to be a female athlete and that playing multiple sports is not only possible, but beneficial and FUN!!!

Thank you to the thirty-five ETHS female student athletes who took time from their schedule to pass on the love of their sport(s) to our 5th grade girls.  Thank you to the PE teachers who were the chaperones for their 5th grade girls.  And BIG THANKS to Freshii who donated the delicious and healthy lunch to the 5th grade girls, the ETHS female student athletes and the PE teachers.  They even gave all the girls a 20% discount on Freshii purchases through November 30th when they wear their Girls Play Sports bracelet to their store in downtown Evanston.
Team Girls Play Sports (Team GPS) is getting ready to start the November (Cross Country and Soccer) monthly unit.  The high school female student athletes are looking forward to teaching the middle school girls all about their sports.  The monthly discussion topic for November is Health and Nutrition. The December monthly unit will focus on Track & Field and Volleyball with a discussion topic on Friendships and Relationships.

The girls that participated in the October (Basketball and Lacrosse) unit last month all did a great job!  For many of them, at least one of the sports was new for them and they could really see how the skills and strategy of each sport complimented the other.  They had a blast playing in the final Basketball & Lacrosse tournament on the final day.  They also heard presentations and engaged in meaningful conversations about dealing with Bullying.

We have completed the October Girls Play Sports After School Clinics at ten District 65 schools and Fleetwood Jourdain Community Center. This program introduces fourth and fifth grade girls to 12 different sports throughout the school year.

Over 200 girls were taught by the ETHS female Basketball and Lacrosse players the basic fundamentals of their sport through fun drills and contests.  We hope this introduction sparks an interest in the girls to pursue new sports!  This November, ETHS female Cross Country and Soccer athletes have already completed their training and have begun visiting the elementary schools to teach the girls about their sports.
We had over forty 4th and 5th grade girls sign up to participate in our first ever Girls Play Sports Volleyball League.  It was a pleasure to coach these girls over the course of the six week league.  They improved tremendously from the first day to the end of the league thanks to the hard work and dedication of our ETHS Volleyball players.  It was very fun to watch the improvement and energy of the girls that participated.  We are very proud of all of their efforts!

The Girls Play Sports League and Tournaments are new for Girls Play Sports this year.  Later in the year we will offer a 3-on-3 winter basketball tournament, a spring middle school badminton tournament, and a summer water polo league at ETHS.

Girls Play Sports has a great article this month in the Athletic Management magazine called Reducing the Gap.
