Principle #3: Member's Economic Participation
Members contribute equally to, and democratically control, the capital of the cooperative. This benefits members in proportion to the business they conduct with the cooperative rather than on the capital invested.
What a great season we had! The 5th season of MMC and the 25th season of Shames Mountain has finished. We may not have received much snow, but made up for it in good weather, good friends, good food and the Shames atmosphere we all love. Thanks to everyone for another great ski season!

MMC Picnic Recap

The MMC picnic was blessed with great weather this season. About 30 of us gathered to hang out by the lake on a wonderful Saturday afternoon. Kids played as parents and friends discussed ski season memories and summer plans. Meredith addressed the group thanking everyone for coming and being involved in their ski hill. She announced that her and Dave Cater would be stepping down from the Board of Directors and reminded everyone that every year the Board needs new blood, and that this is the time to start thinking if you might be interested in joining, or know of someone who might be. Christian addressed the group pointing out the season's highlights:

  • Very little snow besides what we received in pre-season
  • Very nice weather (No extreme wind, no extreme cold, no access road closures, almost every weekend had some sunshine)
  • Very successful kitchen Reno
  • Low fuel costs,
  • Skier visits and consequently, revenue was up

He then let the group know about the upcoming changes to the school program and spoke to the challenge of labor shortages. Both are going to be significant additional operating costs in the future. To counter these costs, an increase in price is necessary and is reflected in the pass and ticket prices.

Heat Recapturing Project
We would like once again to thank the Community Forest for helping us fund our Heat recovery project. The project involves putting a heat exchanger (something to transfer heat from one place to another - we looked it up :)) on our generator to capture the lost heat. This heat is then transferred to a liquid and pumped to the lodge. Once at the lodge the heat is transferred from the liquid to the building with water radiators. The now cooled liquid is then recirculated to the generators to be reheated. Once concluded this project will save up to 10% of the fuel we consume to generate power as we will no longer be generating power for the purpose of running electric heaters.

Because of certain logistical constraints, the project has been delayed until next summer. We simply do not have the manpower to finish planning the project and execute its completion this summer.

A big thank you to all the Credit Union Volunteers

Thanks also to Mel Anderson and Carl Lofroth for their personal investment and efforts in fixing the odor issue with restrooms and taking on the Flip up seat painting project. This summer they have taken on the project of replacing all the chair slats on our chairlift. Cheers guys, and thank you for everything you do.

Barb Tetz for her undertaking of replacing the chairlifts seat cushions. She planned, fundraised, solicited help, equipment, supplies, work locations, researched refurbishing techniques and worked with her team of volunteers to deliver a wonderful finished product.

Volunteer Ski Patrol (CSP) for continuing to provide exceptional first aid and support to our Pro Patrol. They support the mountain Ski patrol team, both with man-power and supplies. This season Shames CSP provided the mountain with First Aid Supplies and new Slow Banners. Over the summer, CSP has committed to purchasing a new first aid toboggan to replace one from our aging fleet.

And a BIG overall thank you to the tireless efforts of our wonderful volunteers! Our mountain wouldn't work with you and we are grateful for everything you do.

...and Congratulations...

Shames Mountain would like to congratulate this seasons Returning and Rookie Staff of the year. In appreciation for their efforts, both have received vouchers for a standby Heliski Trip.

Returning Staff of the year is Richard Wilson
