Screenwriting Challenge of the Day
Character Monologues

Time to work on characters! Learn to look at the world through your character's perspective by writing a short monologue in their voice.

Exercise adapted from The Script Lab

Objective: Learn a character’s insights, thoughts, and feelings.

Exercise: Write a short monologue (max 1 page) that accurately portrays your character. What is he/she feeling at that moment? What is his/her hopes? His/her fears? What does he/she love? Hate?

Remember: The character is speaking to him/herself.

Hints: Use the character’s speech patterns and vocabulary - their voice.

Don't have a character yet? Make one up! Choose a name, age, and occupation and start writing. You’ll be surprised by how much your imagination can come up with. Who knows? Maybe that character will find its way into your screenplay.
