Red Bull’s growing contemporary arts platform embraces Detroit space with
Expanded Artist in Residency Program, Visiting Curator Fellowship, Visiting Writer Fellowship, Micro-Grant Program, and Selection Committee

(DETROIT, MI — JULY 11, 2018) — Red Bull Arts is proud to announce the expansion of its contemporary arts program with the renaming of Red Bull Arts Detroit and the first Selection Committee for its expanded residency program, which will begin in 2019. The Detroit program joins Red Bull Arts New York in a commitment to extend the boundaries of exhibition making; support the production of new work by emerging and established artists; participate in and respond to the needs of local arts communities; and contribute to ongoing dialogue around contemporary issues and thought.

Red Bull Arts Detroit has long been committed to providing artists the space, time, and resources necessary to push their practices forward. Starting next year, Red Bull Arts Detroit will expand its ongoing Artist Residency Program, and initiate three new programs: a Visiting Curator Fellowship, Visiting Writer Fellowship, and an ongoing Micro-Grant program designed to support artists based in the metro Detroit area. Red Bull Arts Detroit’s residency and fellowship programs are designed to respond to the complex needs of an artscene—a community defined by collaboration, exploration, and mutual support.

Full residency details here. Applications will be reviewed by the 2019 Selection Committee: Deana Haggag, President and CEO, United States Artists; the Detroit-native poet Airea D. Matthews; Lucy Mensah, Visiting Assistant Professor of Museum and Exhibition Studies at the University of Illinois in Chicago and formerly of the Detroit Institute of Arts; Laura Raicovich, former President and Executive Director of The Queens Museum of the City of New York; and dancer and choreographer John Michael Schert.



The expanded artists-in-residence program will continue to provide artists at different stages of their careers the resources and freedom to develop their practice. Transportation to Detroit is included, as is on-site housing and access to a 14,000-square-foot studio space. Artists are also provided a $12,000 stipend. At the end of the three-month residency period, artists will be given the opportunity to participate in a group exhibition. Deadline: August 24, 2018.

Conceptualized to enrich the dialogue between the Detroit art community and the international art world, the Visiting Curator Fellowship provides curators ten monthly visits to research, conceptualize, develop, and execute a contemporary art exhibition in Detroit. Travel, accommodations, and a $10,000 stipend are provided. Deadline: August 24, 2018.

The Visiting Writer Fellowship allows a writer to travel to Detroit twice over a two-month period to develop a piece of writing and a public program, such as a talk or a workshop. The writer will be introduced to cultural figures throughout the city, and be in dialogue with the Red Bull Artists in Residence. Travel, accommodations, and a $2,000 stipend are provided. Deadline: August 24, 2018.

The hyperlocal, need-based Micro-Grant Program provides numerous $1,000 grants enabling Detroit local artists to continue their practices. These grants are given on a rolling basis, and are combined with career counseling by Red Bull Arts Detroit staff and advisors. Taken together, these grants represent Red Bull Arts Detroit’s dedication to the local community, and the arts at large. Open for applications on December 1, 2018 with rolling grants awarded starting January of 2019.


DEANA HAGGAG is the President & CEO of United States Artists, a national arts funding organization based in Chicago, IL. Before joining USA in February 2017, she was the Executive Director of The Contemporary, a nomadic and non-collecting art museum in Baltimore, MD, for four years. In addition to her leadership roles, Deana lectures extensively, consults on various art initiatives, contributes to cultural publications, and has taught at institutions such as Johns Hopkins University and Towson University. She is on the Board of Trustees of the Detroit Institute of Arts, Maryland Institute College of Art and Common Field, as well as on the Advisory Council of Recess. She received her MFA in Curatorial Practice from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a BA from Rutgers University in Art History and Philosophy.
AIREA D. MATTHEWS is the author of Simulacra, winner of the 2016 Yale Series of Younger Poets. The New Yorker critic, Dan Chiasson, describes Matthews's experimental forms in Simulacra as "Fugues, text messages to the dead, imagined outtakes from Wittgenstein, tart mini-operas, fairy tales: Matthews is virtuosic, frantic, and darkly, very darkly, funny." Her work has appeared in Callaloo, Best American Poets 2015, Harvard Review, American Poet, and elsewhere. She was awarded a 2016 Rona Jaffe Writer’s Foundation Award, the 2016 Louis Untermeyer Scholarship in Poetry from Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, a 2015 Kresge Literary Arts award as well as fellowships from Cave Canem, Callaloo and The James Merrill House. Matthews's current projects include a second book, broke, which seeks to lyrically deconstruct the accepted narratives around poverty and class in first-world countries. She is an assistant professor at Bryn Mawr College where she directs the Creative Writing Program.
LUCY MENSAH is an art critic, independent curator, and Visiting Assistant Professor of Museum and Exhibition Studies at the University of Illinois in Chicago’s School of Art & Art History. Formerly an Assistant Curator of Post-1950 Contemporary Art at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Mensah has held a range of appointments at institutions such as the Frist Art Museum in Nashville, Tennessee; the National Museum of American History in Washington D.C.; and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Her area of expertise is in contemporary art, social equity in museums, and contemporary curatorial practices.
LAURA RAICOVICH is an independent curator and writer. Until recently, she served as President and Executive Director of the Queens Museum, where she oversaw a range of exhibitions. In 2018, Raicovich is co-curating Mel Chin: All Over the Place with Manon Slome and No Longer Empty, the first major presentation in New York City of artist Mel Chin in more than 20 years that will occupy the entire Queens Museum. Prior to working at the Queens Museum, Raicovich inaugurated Creative Time’s Global Initiatives; launched Creative Time Reports; and directed the organization's annual conference. She arrived there after a decade at Dia Art Foundation, where she served as Deputy Director and was a key member of the senior team during a period of transformation. Raicovich lectures internationally and has organized numerous talks and programs, including a seminar series at the Vera List Center that was later anthologized in a book of essays, "Assuming Boycott: Resistance, Agency, and Cultural Production" (OR Books, 2017). She is the author of "At the Lightning Field" (Coffee House Press, 2017) and "A Diary of Mysterious Difficulties" (Publication Studio, 2014).
JOHN MICHAEL SCHERT is an artist and producer working in multiple sectors and translating across many platforms. Originally from South Georgia, and now residing in Boise, Idaho, Schert began his career as a ballet dancer with American Ballet Theatre and Alonzo King LINES Ballet after attending high school at The University of North Carolina School of the Arts. In 2004 he co-founded Trey McIntyre Project (TMP), concurrently serving as the company’s Executive Director, and a dancer, for nine years. From October 2013 to January 2017 Schert served as the inaugural Visiting Artist and Social Entrepreneur at The University of Chicago Booth School of Business, and as an Associate Fellow with the NYU Center for Ballet and the Arts in Fall 2014. As the founder and principal of JMS & Company, John Michael consults for clients such as The James S. and John L. Knight Foundation, The Boston Foundation, Chicago Booth, the City of Boston, American Ballet Theatre and Soho House, and additionally speaks in cities around the world. He is the executive producer of Boise’s B Corp certified Treefort Music Fest. Schert holds a Master in Public Administration, class of 2018, from the Harvard University John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Red Bull Arts Detroit is an artist residency, visiting curator and writer fellowship, micro-grant program, and experimental, non-commercial exhibition space. Since 2011, the organization has ensured a sustained commitment to the cultivation and advancement of the arts in Detroit and beyond. In 2018, Red Bull Arts Detroit joined Red Bull Arts New York as the second pillar of the Red Bull Arts platform. Located in Eastern Market’s historic E&B Brewery, the organization (formerly known as Red Bull House of Art) has hosted over 100 resident artists, and served countless community members through exhibitions, studio assistantships, and inclusion in a variety of programs.


Red Bull Arts is an experimental, non-commercial arts program dedicated to creating new opportunities for artists and fostering public engagement in the arts. The program aims to extend the boundaries of exhibition making; support the production of new work by emerging and established artists; participate in and respond to the needs of local arts communities; and contribute to ongoing dialogue around contemporary issues and thought.
