news from UFA about Alaska's salmon habitat
As you and other Alaska salmon fishermen get into the full swing of pre-seaon prep, we're scanning the horizon for policies and events that impact the health of our salmon fisheries.

Here are the top 5 salmon habitat items on deck right now:
  • 2 items need your attention today
  • 2 are events we invite you to attend
  • 1 is a big news story about salmon habitat
  • + 1 bonus!
Your commercial fishing perspective is needed for State Legislative discussions this week.

Will you share the perspective of our industry and fishing families by writing a short note about the following items?

1. Transboundary resolution needs your attention

This Monday, the House Resource Committee is considering a resolution aimed at protecting transboundary fish, water quality, businesses, and culture. HJR 9 would leverage international and enforceable measures to do so. > Learn more

Commercial fishing perspectives about the value of transboundary fisheries are needed right now for the Monday hearing. Can you write a short letter today?

2. Salmon habitat permitting process update - first proposed since statehood

A new bill based on recommendations from the Board of Fisheries, HB 199, would update Alaska's fish habitat permitting process for the first time in 61 years. HB 199 has a hearing on Tuesday in the House Fisheries Committee. > Learn more

The bill is a first take on addressing perceived gaps in ADF&G’s fish habitat permit process, including adding criteria from the Sustainable Salmon Policy to the law, requiring public notice on permits and clarifying rules for development in salmon habitat.

Again, decision makers on the House Fisheries Committee would benefit from your take on the value of salmon habitat for their Tuesday 10am meeting.

3. Take a deep dive into salmon habitat policy

This Tuesday, April 11th, come hear what's happening with salmon habitat laws that protect our fisheries' resource.

Renowned fisheries journalist Laine Welch will moderate the panel, which includes Rep. Louise Stutes, ADF&G leaders, Bob King, Alaska Miners Association, and salmon habitat advocates.

If you're in Juneau, you'll get appetizers and a no-host bar. If you're elsewhere or in your pajamas, you can live stream the event on UFA's Salmon Habitat Information Program (SHIP) Facebook page.

The event is hosted by The Center for Salmon and Society, and co-sponsored by UFA's SHIP and Salmon Connect.

4. Climate change impact on fisheries is a hot topic

Sorry, we couldn't resist! The Alaska Ocean Center is hosting Climate Change and Alaska Fisheries: A presentation and community discussion with Terry Johnson. He's a commercial fisherman, reporter, writer, and marine recreation and tourism specialist. The event is Thursday, April 13th, in Juneau.  > Learn more

5. Chuitna surprise

In an unexpected announcement late last week, developers of the Chuitna Coal Project shelved mining plans.

When PacRim first proposed mining through a salmon stream to access a coal ore body, fishermen were alarmed. It's good to know that we won't be looking at trading salmon habitat for coal on this important cook inlet stream until extraction can be done in a way that won't harm the fish.

BONUS - Repping fishermen to legislators

UFA recently presented to the State Legislature on what salmon habitat means to Alaska fishermen. Many legislators and staff were in the audience!

Remember, 79% of fishermen get their news from other fishermen. So, do talk up what's happening with Alaska's salmon habitat!!
