Congratulations to Freya, our hugely talented Year 13 swimmer, who has just been awarded a £150,000 scholarship at the prestigious Ohio State University where she can develop her passion for swimming alongside academic study. Thanks parents, pupils and staff from Year 7 and 12 who met together this week to review progress. What a fantastic turnout!
Sixth Form Students Set their Sites on Top Universities
This week seven of our ambitious students have submitted their University applications for the most competitive courses in the country. Two students are aiming for Veterinary Medicine, one for Medicine and four for Oxbridge applying for a range of subjects including; Natural Sciences and Modern and Medieval Languages at Cambridge, Philosophy Politics & Economics and History and Politics at Oxford. We wish them all the best!
Super Students in for a Treat
To celebrate the closing of our popular ‘Southmoor Ices’ rewards initiative, next week, pupils awarded with a special token for exceeding expectations in lessons, can claim a tasty treat from the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream range. The scheme has been such a hit with our pupils that we are looking to introduce something similar for the winter season.
Year 12 Take to The Lakes
Year 12 went for their traditional ‘Welcome to Sixth Form’ visit to the Lake District last weekend. 70 students and staff descended on Derwent Hill, for a packed few days of gill-scrambling, canoeing, high rope challenges and midnight walks. The students were impeccable - just what we expect from our sixth formers - and thankfully no one was taken by the dreaded Cumbrian Black Dog, despite some mysterious sounds in the night!
Something Spooky Coming to Southmoor
This Autumn sees the return of our annual Halloween bash. Our sixth form students are staging the event for both Year 7 an 8 with tickets on sale between Wednesday and Friday, in the small quad during break time. Tickets cost £2 and include a hot dog and drink, with plenty of fun games and competitions - get dressed up and join us if you dare!
What do you do at Southmoor?
I am one of the new teachers here in the Science Department with my specialism being Biology.
Who was your favourite teacher at school? Of course I did love many of my science teachers, however my maths teacher, Mr Allom is unforgettable. He was the most inspirational and engaging teacher I ever had. If I can be as half as good as him I know I will have done a good job!
What do you like to do in your spare time? I love going to the theatre as a treat, so am looking forward to seeing Mary Poppins this weekend. I also like to try and keep myself fit, so I aim to exercise three times a week. My favourite class is Boxerfit!
Who is your favourite musical artist or band? I do love a bit of Calvin Harris, especially in the run up to the weekend. However, on those dark gloomy mornings, Ed Sheeran is great for relaxation.
What's the best thing about Southmoor? Here at Southmoor the staff are so supportive of one another. Due to the staff morale, we are all able to create the best lessons and environment for all of our students to learn.
What's the one thing you could never be without? As soppy as it sounds it has to be my mam. It's not until you get a bit older, you realise how much your mother does for you!
