It’s fair to say that a competitive spirit is part of Southmoor’s psyche and it’s something I am very proud of. Aspiration and achievement are certainly in abundance this week: from our links with Durham University, through to notable victories in sport and participation in worthy competitions. It was great to see so many of you at the Sixth Form Open Evening and as always, the stars of the show were our own student ambassadors…
Durham University, currently ranked 5th in the United Kingdom, is one of the most prestigious and well known academic establishments in the country. On 11th February Durham University is teaming up with Southmoor to deliver training to English teachers of the future.
Our very own Miss Summerside will be leading the proceedings in what is a fabulous opportunity to extend the links between our Academy and one of the most reputed educational establishments in the world!
Tin Appeal Stacking Up
This week saw the launch of our annual Tin Appeal. Having gratefully received a whopping 1400 tins last year, we are aiming to smash this target for 2015. All tins donated are gratefully collected by a local organisation to feed homeless people in the area.
Please support us by donating a tin. These are collected on a weekly basis with the final deadline being Friday 11th December 2015.
Road to Safety
This morning Year 8 watched a hard hitting road safety performance.
The interactive Theatre-in-Education presentation and supporting workshops made our pupils think of the dangers they face as pedestrians. Year 8 were gripped by the fast-paced and engaging multi-media play and learned valuable lessons about pedestrian safety, distractions and coping with and challenging the issue of peer pressure.
‘ A healthy life is a happy life.’
‘Positive thoughts, positive behaviour.’
‘Don’t strive for perfection, strive for happiness.’
These are just three of the mottos that our Year 9 and 10 ‘Young Health Champions’ want to convey. After following an accredited programme, pupils will act as mentors, to provide health and wellbeing support to their peers. The Champions are taking their message beyond Southmoor, with plans underway to visit younger pupils in local primary schools, encouraging them to ‘Get Educated, Get Involved & Get Healthy!’
Introducing Our School Nurse
Throughout this week, pupils met Mrs Allen, a member of our school nursing team. Mrs Allen emphasised her role as the school nurse, offering health support and advice and routine health screening.
Mrs Allen advised that any pupils seeking health support and advice should contact her through either their tutor or head of house; or to visit her during her lunchtime drop-in session, details of which will be available in the New Year.
With the loss of many lives in our open waters, the pupils of Southmoor Academy are promoting awareness of the risks associated with open water. Students have prepared radio adverts to highlight positive messages concerning water safety. One lucky winner will have their advert broadcast across Sunderland on SunFM. Good luck to our entrants from Southmoor!
This Week in Southmoor Sport
Year 8 members of our Martin Gray Football Academy won the Autumn Term under 13 tournament and our Year 7 netball team also triumphed against Monkwearmouth!
Who was your favourite teacher at school? My favourite teacher was Mrs Hardwood, she was so gentle and kind but a really good English teacher. We could feel at ease with her in lessons but knew when to draw the line and get on with our work!
What do you like to do in your spare time? I am a HUGE Sunderland fan, so spend a lot of my spare time at games both home and away; I have had a season ticket since I was 7! Other than that, I like to spend time with my friends, family and my little nephew Finley
Who is your favourite musical artist or band? I really like indie music and going to see bands. My favourite has to be Kasabian but I love The Stone Roses, Oasis and Arctic Monkeys too. I also listen to really old school music that my Dad used to like, such as Led Zeppelin and The Who - look them up, you will love them!
What's the best thing about Southmoor? The pupils - we truly have some of the most gifted kids! No day is the same and the generosity of spirit and enthusiasm that our students show, regardless of what might be going on in their lives, never ceases to amaze me! The staff are all right too - ha ha!
What's the one thing you could never be without? My false eyelashes! Think they have become my trade mark now; I wouldn't be seen without them - the bigger the better I say!
Our Sixth Form Open Evening 2015
Last night we opened our doors down in The Sixth Form Centre. Our experienced and well-qualified team of staff were on hand to impart crucial information and advice about the wide range of academic A-Level courses on offer. Support and guidance was also available to help lead the way to those all important applications top universities.
The event was well attended not only by Southmoor pupils but from potential students from across the city intrigued by what Sunderland’s only non-faith school based sixth form has to offer.
