Thanks to everyone who commented on, and voted for, the new uniform choices. The skirt and tie with the most votes is shown below and will be worn from September. Pupils have received a letter today containing all the details. This may also be viewed on Southmoor’s new website on this page. Have a great half term break!
A Spot of Housework
Along with our uniform, we have also decided to give our House Team logos a spring clean. We called upon the creative skills of school designer, Mr. Davison, who has rebranded the graphics for each House. We are pleased to launch these new designs in this edition of the blog and new badges will be provided for pupils in September to be worn as part of our updated school uniform.
Know your Onions!
At the start of the school year, our Year 7 pupils used research and investigation to determine how to grow a plant from a seed including germination and potting. Every Year 7 pupil has now planted an onion set and will hopefully reap the benefit of their knowledge and understanding in the successful growth of their own onion in September 2016. Watch out for our ’Biggest Onion’ competition!
Calling all Adrenalin Junkies
As part of this year’s annual Activities Day, pupils in Years 7 to 9 will have the opportunity to take part in a thrill-seeking visit to Flamingo Land Resort in Yorkshire on Thursday 7th July. Letters containing further details were issued to pupils earlier today. They can also be downloaded from this page on our Academy website. Places must be confirmed by Friday 17th June please.
Our summer reward incentives continue this week with the launch of ‘Rio Rewards’ based upon the theme of the forthcoming Olympic Games to be hosted in Brazil. Students will participate in themed competitions based upon Olympic ideals and can be awarded Bronze, Silver and Gold tickets allowing them entry into weekly prize draws. Pupils with 100% attendance each week will also be granted further automatic entries. All entries will be resubmitted into a bumper prize draw for each House Team to win a £200 high street shopping spree... what a way to get your summer off to a winning start!
As well as getting busy in the garden with onions and hens, in Science our Year 7 pupils are also looking after our new arrival of chicks. In addition to caring for their cute fluffy friends, the pupils are also exploring their life cycle, survival skills and producing their very own ‘Chick Diaries’ to record their findings.
Year 12 Performance
After many hours of rehearsal and preparation, the day of the AS Drama and Theatre Studies performance exam finally arrived. Each student was to perform a two minute monologue as well as taking part in a group performance of ‘Two’ by Jim Cartwright. The play tells the tale of the lives of the regulars in a northern pub. It is a brutal play both comedic and tragic, exploring the highs and lows of life and love. It was a great challenge to the actors who were required to multi-role play a range of characters. The select audience thoroughly enjoyed the performance, often laughing and sometimes reduced to tears. The candidates should be extremely proud of their achievements.
What do you do at Southmoor? I’m a Maths Teacher and have been at Southmoor for 3 years. I also have responsibility for numeracy across the school.
Who was your favourite teacher at school? Obviously my maths teacher, Mrs Turnbull. She would let me teach topics to others who were struggling once I’d finished my work; she inspired me to become a maths teacher. There was a puzzle she would ask us to solve which we must have spent hours trying to figure out. I later found out, when doing my Maths degree, that it was impossible!
What do you like to do in your spare time? I love musicals and going to the theatre. Most of my spare time is spent with family and friends. I’ve recently started to run and my younger brother and I have been trying to beat our personal bests at the ‘Parkrun’ each Saturday morning.
Who is your favourite musical artist or band? I have an eclectic taste in music, from pop to rock, to brass bands and classical! To be honest, I like anything I can shake a tambourine at!
What's the best thing about Southmoor? The best thing about Southmoor has to be the friendships I’ve made. I work with some amazing people and I’m glad that we are now great friends.
What's the one thing you could never be without? It has to be chocolate. And it has to be Galaxy!
