Greetings MAM Community,

November is Native American Heritage Month. I invite you and your family to review the following resources, lessons and discussion materials provided by the National Museum of the American Indian, a Smithsonian institution.

Harvest Ceremony, Beyond the First Thanksgiving

Rethinking Thanksgiving Celebrations: Native Perspectives on Thanksgiving

I am thankful (this month and always) for the ability to learn and unlearn and to question and for opportunities to gain new and different perspectives. Practicing life-long learning, in real time, and in front of our children is one of the most valuable (and FREE) gifts we can give them.

Since I am expressing gratitude, I have a few more thanks to offer in this, the last Weekly E of November:

Thank you to our children/students, staff and families who made our school such a welcoming place for Mrs. Bosworth to serve as our APIC/acting principal in-charge while Mr. DiCarlo was out on his medical leave.  It is a tricky dance to show up in another school community for a short term gig; Mrs. Bosworth served dutifully and willingly. Thank you, Mrs. Bosworth!

We heard that Mr. DiCarlo is (thankfully!) doing very well and is excited to return to MAM (as anticipated) on Monday, November 28th.

Thank you to the MAM Community for really turning up for kids last week for the MAM Fund’s Fall Giving week and thank you to Jasper the Jaguar for coming out to celebrate!

Thank you to our students and staff for an adorable day-before-break PJ DAY!

I do hope your next few days are filled with friends, family, relaxation, growth and gratitude.

Upper El Dance: DID YOU KNOW?
Since October, MAM Upper El students have been sharing their gym time once each week (thanks Coach Melissa!) with the
Danceworks' Mad Hot Rhythm program. ALL Upper El students are expected to participate in dance classes and those that want will have the opportunity to participate in the Danceworks Mad Hot Rhythm city-wide competition in April 2023 (date TBD). Check out these short videos to learn more about the 3 dance styles in this year's program (NOTE: these videos share information about the dance styles the students are learning, they are NOT the choreography for this year's program): The students have all seen these videos, so they might delight in watching them with you. I also encourage the students to practice outside of the once-a-week in-school classes; one of the BEST ways to practice dance is to teach it to someone else! Consider having your Upper El dancer teach you, a sibling, or another family member/friend some of their dance moves 😊.
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions about the Danceworks' Mad Hot Rhythm program.

It is NOT TOO LATE to give to the MAM Fund!  There is still a donation MATCH on the table, so please remember to donate if you have not already!

Matching for Maryland

Through the generosity of several MAM families and community businesses, all donations to the Maryland Avenue Montessori Fund during Fall Giving Week will be matched up to a pledged amount. No amount is too small! Invite your friends and family to support our school as well, and they will be happy to know that their efforts will have a double impact!  If you are interested in becoming a matching family, please contact the fund at fundmam@gmail.com

Here’s how you can make your tax deductible donation:

  1. Online (preferred!): click on the DONATE button on the MAM FUND webpage at www.mamfund.org

  1. Check: Return a CHECK made out to MPS Foundation with memo MAM FUND to school in the provided envelope.

  2. Triple Match: check out the attached non-exhaustive list of Milwaukee area companies that match donations - perhaps yours is one of them!  Check with your employer if you don’t see them on the list, they still may provide a match.  If so, your donation could be TRIPLED!

Many corporations feel a sense of responsibility to give back. The following corporations have either direct giving programs, foundations, sponsorship programs, in-kind donations, product donations, volunteer programs, or matching gift programs.

If you don’t see your company on this list, but believe it should be, please let us know so we can share it with the community! If you aren’t certain, check with your HR department!
