Achieve Family,

This past month, we've been so inspired by our Achieve community! From graduations (congrats to our seniors!) to over 150 (!!) read aloud videos submitted for our digital library, from college acceptances to students seeking out volunteer opportunities to help their community, we're reminded every day about how truly empathetic, passionate, hard-working, a
nd giving you all are.

feel so lucky to be a part of this Achieve family with you.

Speaking of inspiration - this past week, we were so inspired by Former President Barack Obama's commencement address for the nation's high school seniors. President Obama spoke about how this pandemic has spotlighted the underlying inequalities present in our country, and he charged the graduates with setting the world on a different path. He shared:

"This pandemic has shaken up the status quo and laid bare a lot of our country's deep-seated problems - from massive economic inequality to ongoing racial disparities to a lack of basic health care for people who need it. It's woken up a lot of young people to the fact that the old ways of doing things just don't work; that it doesn't matter how much money you make if everyone around you is hungry and sick; and that our society and democracy only works when we think not just about ourselves, but about each other."

We now have the opportunity to build a "new normal" reality - a reality that demonstrates our commitment to caring for each other. The time to start building that reality is now. We each have skills and materials we can bring to this construction project, whether that's a financial donation, a phone call to an elected leader, a few hours of your time to volunteer, or a letter of support to a family that is struggling (see a few opportunities below to volunteer with Achieve). Will you join us in setting the world on a different path? We hope you'll say yes.

This newsletter is filled with lots of goodies - from the launch of our new Adventure Hour series (for elementary students, and we also need high school volunteers) to an upcoming College Empower Hour focused on community service opportunities, from a few Shoutouts (we love shoutouts!) to highlighted opportunities to support your Miami community. Oh, and we're hiring!

And before we go - let us say again how inspired we are by you all. Keep persevering, keep leading with kindness, and keep forging connections wherever you go. Together, we can achieve!

With love,
-Leslie, Sarah, and the rest of the Achieve team

The Achieve Bookworm Challenge encourages and incentivizes elementary students to continue reading! This virtual challenge is in collaboration with our elementary school partners - Jesse J. McCrary Elementary, Earlington Heights Elementary, Caribbean K-8 Center, and Frederick Douglass Elementary. Through the challenge, Little Buddies read an Accelerated Reader book, take a quiz, and receive points every time they pass a quiz. So far we've had 16 winners in the month of April, with our top winner Lucia Amador from Caribbean K-8 Center reading 43 books! The competition for the month of May ends June 4th!

Thanks to our amazing Achieve family, we reached our 10 Days of Connection #AchieveReadAloudChallenge goal of 100 videos. In fact, we far exceeded that goal with a total of over 150 videos being submitted by May 10th! We would like to give a special shoutout to our Big Buddies for their commitment and also highlight some incredible community guests that joined our community effort! A huge thanks to:

Let's give a huge shoutout to all our incredible achievers that received college acceptances! Today, we're excited to feature Shirley Campos! Shirley has participated with Achieve as a member of the Junior Board, as a Saturday Big Buddy, as a College Readiness Cohort Member and as a Teaching Assistant with Achieve Music. Using the entrepreneurial skills she learned through the Achieve Music Learning Lab, Shirley developed a service project with a specific lens towards college admittance/scholarships. Shirley was accepted into 30 colleges and offered $1 Million in scholarships. Congrats, Shirley! You can read more about Shirley's achievements here
