Forward to a Friend
2 February 2017
Dear St Mary's Community

Tena koutou

Welcome to 2017 and the Year of Excellence, 'creating Hauora for one and all', at St Mary’s College. An especially warm welcome to all our new students who started today.

Wouldn’t you know it – as i write this it is raining. The first day the new Year 7 students are arriving and many of the older students returning and we have summer rain. While it adds the list of things to consider when preparing for school; morning tea, bus tickets, pick up and drop offs there are now raincoats and umbrellas to add to the list. But we must remember to be grateful and turn our thoughts to the old wisdom that tells us that rain on a special day is about abundant goodness and prosperity in the future. This is what we wish for our students, families and staff as they start a new year and a little rain will not dampen our spirits.

The staff have now enjoyed the opportunity over the past few days to get organised and welcome the new faces amongst them. We have a very exciting team of teachers and support staff and I am confident that we continue to put in front of our students, teachers of the highest calibre. The reward for having excellent staff can be seen once again in our NCEA results. We are awaiting final confirmation from NZQA but we have received the following interim results.

NCEA Level 1 – 96.9% pass rate - Merit and Excellence Endorsed 85.4% of students
NCEA Level 2 – 99.4% pass rate - Merit and Excellence Endorsed 83.8% of students
NCEA Level 3 – 93% pass rate- Merit and Excellence Endorsed 80.2% of students
University Entrance – 87.7%

These are remarkably good results that the girls can be very proud of and we will publish the confirmed results in a later newsletter. It is indisputable that opportunities come with education and our students are well on their way to a world full of possibilities.
God Bless you all during the year ahead.
Yours in Mercy

Bernadette Stockman

Lord Jesus, we ask for Your help as we begin this new school year.
Allow us to experience Your presence in the many blessings You put before us.
Open our eyes to the new challenges and exciting opportunities that this new school year brings.
Open our heart and mind to new friends and new teachers.
Give us a generous spirit to be enthusiastic with our studies and courage to accept new opportunities.

student vehicles to school & parking permits - 2017

Year 13 students only, wishing to drive cars to school, need to complete a "Permission to Drive to and from School" form and attach a photocopy of their license to it. Both parents and the student will need to sign this form which is available from the Office.

There is no off - street parking.  A parking zone exists around the area and so if you want to park close to the school you will need to apply for a permit from Auckland Transport. Without the permit you will be ticketed.  The online application will cost you $70 for the year. Auckland Transport has informed us that a letter of support from the College must also be provided with this application form.

We will update you regarding parking permits when further information is available  from Auckland Transport.

duke of edinburgh - year 13

In the last week of the school holidays, the Year 13 Gold Duke of Edinburgh students completed a three night kayak expedition in the Bay of Islands for their practice journey. The students worked on their navigation, kayaking technique and survived a night in the bush with no facilities. They were very lucky with the weather with sunshine every day and they enjoyed the stunning scenery and swimming at the beautiful islands. It was a great way to start the school year.

Swimming Sports and Athletics Day

Swimming Sports  - 10 February 2017 - Venue - St Mary' College

Athletics Day - 17 February 2017 - Venue - Lloyd Elsmore Park

The school Athletics is held at Lloyd Elsmore in Pakuranga. Students who take the normal Coachways and Kiwi Buses will take them to Pakuranga directly. They will also pick them up from Pakuranga. We will be providing extra buses at St Marys to take the students out to Lloyd Elsmore. However, if you can take your daughter out there directly, this would be a great help. Please join us for the day which is always lots of fun. At the venue there is very little shade so small tents and marquees are encouraged.
