Client Saved from Homelessness The death of a loved one is a very distressing time, especially for public housing tenants. Anna* (not her real name) asked for our help last year as she was being evicted from the home she had lived in since she was a baby due to the death of her father. Housing NSW argued that they did not know that Anna lived there, despite the fact that the unit had always been her home and she was listed as living there as a child. This was extremely shocking and distressing for Anna, who was facing an immediate eviction from the only home she had ever known, and faced being put on a Housing NSW waitlist that could take many years to find her a new home. KLC negotiated with Housing NSW over a long time period on behalf of Anna outlining her unique circumstances and we are delighted that Anna has been given a home very close to her family home. KLC’s intervention has saved Anna from homelessness at a time in her life that she was deeply grieving and unable to advocate for herself. She is delighted with the result and grateful for the timely help she received from KLC.

Coronavirus – Safety of our Clients, Students, Volunteers and Staff The efforts to contain the coronavirus are generating major challenges for UNSW and all universities in Australia. UNSW is seeking to manage the situation as effectively and compassionately as we can. UNSW has taken this health threat very seriously and is acting immediately on information and recommendations of the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC).
UNSW and KLC will continue to update students and staff as information is made available and we will be working with them to ensure the safety of all of our stakeholders. We have a very flexible service delivery model and are prepared to ensure that our more vulnerable clients are serviced in an appropriate and timely manner. We have instituted measures within the Centre to ensure the safety of our clients, students, volunteers and staff. Click here for more information.

Denise Wasley Wins Dean’s Award for Collegiality 2019
KLC was delighted to learn that our long serving (suffering?) Office Manager, Denise Wasley, was awarded the Dean’s Award for Collegiality in December in recognition of the positive and productive relationships she has developed with colleagues in the Law Faculty over the years. KLC values the close relationship we enjoy with our law workmates and are grateful for all the help they give us, often going that extra mile. Congratulations Denise – for this well-deserved recognition!

Health Justice Project Update KLC's Health Justice Partnership with Prince of Wales Hospital and the Eastern Suburbs Mental Health Service is under way! We are receiving regular referrals from both of our health partners and working closely with health staff to make sure clients get the help they need when they need it most. The legal issues arising from these referrals are complex and multi-faceted. So far we have given advice on matters involving tenancy law, debts, fines, criminal matters and guardianship. Most clients we see are dealing with several legal issues in addition to chronic illness or acute medical crisis. We look forward to officially launching this exciting new and much-needed service in the near future. If you have any questions about the project email us at: hjp@unsw.edu.au
