SPECIAL EDITION - KLC Director Associate Professor Anna Cody to be Dean of Law at Western Sydney University Law School

Farewell Anna!

It is with great sadness for us all at KLC, but excellent news for Anna Cody that we announce that Western Sydney University has appointed Anna as their new Dean of Law.
Anna has made an enormous contribution to KLC. She started work at the Centre in 1995 as a solicitor/clinical supervisor running cases such as Joy Williams v NSW (stolen generations) and other discrimination cases and domestic violence cases with a strong emphasis on addressing systemic injustice through the law. She took leave in 1998 for a year and completed her Masters at Harvard, then returned and left again in 2000. She returned in 2004 when appointed as Director and Senior Lecturer (then later Associate Professor) of KLC and has been with the Centre since 2004 in this role. She has worked with the Centre for almost 20 years.
During her time here KLC’s funding has increased from $500,000 to $1.2 million per annum and the Centre now teaches a clinical component of interviewing clients to all Lawyers, Ethics and Justice students, which is unique in Australia and internationally.

She has developed and teaches two additional courses: a Family Law and Domestic Violence clinical course and Legal Aid and Global Justice Lawyering. Justice in all its forms is crucial to how Anna sees the role of law and lawyers in our community. This has also been evidenced by her leadership in the community legal centre movement as Chair of CLC NSW for three years, and serving on the boards of the NSW Legal Aid Commission, the National Association of Community Legal Centres and the Global Alliance of Justice Education. UNSW’s clinical program has developed and grown during the time she has been with KLC and she has ensured it is well recognised internationally for its innovative and extensive clinical education program.

Anna and the team at KLC have won numerous teaching awards for the leading clinical program which they run at KLC.  These include in 2001 the University of New South Wales Vice-Chancellor’s Teaching Award for Excellence, and the Australian Universities Teaching Award in the Law and Legal Studies section, as well as individually the 2007 NSW Women Lawyers Achievement awards, government/community lawyer of the year, and in 2010 University of New South Wales Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence and the Australian Awards for University Teaching, Citation for Outstanding contribution to Student Learning and in 2016 the Australian Human Rights Commission Law Award.
Anna has grown the Centre’s work in law reform and systemic advocacy, building KLC’s leadership of NGO participation in monitoring Australia’s compliance with its international human rights obligations.

Anna will finish at Kingsford Legal Centre on 12 April, but will take leave from the end of February. Please join us in wishing Anna all the best for her exciting new position at WSU.
