KLC urges NSW Government to Increase Fairness of Victims Compensation Scheme

KLC, victims and Community Legal Centres are urging the NSW Government to address issues in the current victims compensation scheme. KLC is concerned about the of the scheme for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse deserve better recognition of the pain and suffering they experience.  KLC believes there needs to be:
  • Higher compensation payments that better recognise the pain and suffering experienced by victims of DV, sexual assault, child sexual abuse and child abuse;
  • Removal of time limits for victims for all aspects of the scheme; and
  • Acceptance of wider forms of evidence of an act of violence and injury.
KLC Director, Anna Cody, spoke to the ABC about this issue. You can read it on the ABC website here

KLC Achieves Australian College of Educators (ACE) Award

KLC staff are honoured to have been selected to receive the NSW Community Service & Social Justice Award from the Australian College of Educators. The award will be presented on Friday 4 August at the ACE NSW Annual Awards.  The award is for Social Justice and Community Service and will recognise the work of KLC, linked with the universities, schools and students involved in our work.

After completing a course at Kingsford Legal Centre, or finishing a law degree at UNSW, many students want to work in public interest or human rights law.  But they don’t know how to take that first step and they face the barrier of getting their first job in public interest law.

It can be hard to start a public interest law career. For years now KLC has wanted to provide the bridge for some of the incredibly bright, passionate, dedicated and smart young lawyers we work with to start their social justice focussed careers. We want to offer them a chance to get their first 12 months experience as a solicitor in a high quality, well functioning community legal centre: Kingsford Legal Centre. We know about teaching students about the law and the legal system, and we are great at supervising new lawyers too.

To achieve this we need your help to fund it. We aim to raise $90,000 to fund a 12 month fellowship position annually.
Your contribution will make all the difference to supporting our next generation of public interest lawyers, so please give generously now!

Funding Update

The 2017-2018 Federal Budget confirmed that the proposed cuts to CLCs would not proceed. It provided:
  • $39 million for Community Legal Centres
  • $16.7 million for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services
  • $3.4 million new funding for up to six new domestic violence units in ‘legal centres’
  • $1.2 million for the knowmore legal service
The additional funding for CLCs provides the sector with a lifeline and prevents the immediate reduction or closure of services. We welcome the of funding cuts to KLC.
The next step is working towards long-term and sustainable funding for the sector including the injection of an additional $120 million per year as recommended by the Productivity Commission.

South Eastern Community Centre (SECC)  POSITIVE AGING CELEBRATION

KLC went along to SECC’s ‘Positive Aging’ day at Eastlakes Community Hall, to celebrate the UN’s World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.   We had lots of interest in our services and fielded some general info questions, booked some appointments and we also helped a few people figure out the local CLC for where their friends lived who had other questions.

There was a presentation by Vicki Johnston from The Deli about elder abuse, which was really informative.  There was a stellar set of performances by the Older Women’s Network, whose incredible set list of songs modified to spread the word about elder abuse as well as a belly dancer.  All up, a very enjoyable and informative day!
