This will be my last Commodore’s Message to you, our members. I hope you all have enjoyed reading them as much as I have writing them. It has been a privilege and honour to serve the RGYC as Commodore and I leave knowing the club is in good hands and has a very exciting future.

From the Board

Board Elections: The Returning Officer has advised the results of the Board Elections: Roger Bennett has been declared as RGYC Commodore for the 2022-23 season. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Roger and wish him and all the board all the best in their upcoming terms in office.

Special Resolutions: Absentee Voting on Special Resolutions is now closed and as previously advised, members will be able to vote, if you have not lodged an Absentee Vote, by attending the AGM in person or via Zoom.

2022 AGM: Our AGM is on tonight at the club Thursday 25th August 2022 at 6.30 pm. As we require 10% of members eligible to vote at the AGM to have a quorum, I encourage all our members who can attend the meeting in person or via Zoom to please do so. For more details: Click HERE

Membership Category Changes:  As previously stated the proposed Rule changes in the Special Resolutions will be presented to the Members at the AGM tonight, Thursday 25th August 2022. We encourage our members to review and fully understand these proposed changes that are designed to make our club more engaging and inclusive for ALL our members.

OTB/Sailing School Update: Following discussions with our Project Managers the project has now been retendered; all the relevant documentation was issued on Monday. The three short-listed builders have indicated that we will have a new Fixed Lump Price by the 19th of September. This means that construction could commence early to mid-October.

Wednesday Member’s Night: Last night saw the announcement of the Board Elections and the Pool Competition continued. The Member’s Draw did not proceed so the three bottles of wine will jackpot to next week.

Friday Night Member’s Draw: Last Friday the club was packed, and it was pleasing to see our members and guests supporting our club. The Member's Draw has jackpotted to $300, and we will have 4 slabs of Carlton Draught. Harry’s Foundation Meat Raffle will not be on this week. Board Member Laura Cora will be our Officer of the Day. So come on down and enjoy a meal from OUR YOT Café and Bistro.

Geelong Youth Engagement: This Friday the club will be hosting year 10 students and mentors from the Geelong Youth Engagement Group. Thanks to the crews from Reverie and Patternmaker who will be giving their time to take the group on a sail around the bay.

RGYC Sailing: The Davidson’s Winter Series Race 7 is on this Saturday 27th of August. To celebrate the end of the Winter Series, we will hold a post-race BBQ with Live Music from 3 – 6 pm, so hang around and enjoy.

ORCV Race to Geelong: From all reports the ORCV Melbourne Geelong Race was an enormous success, both on and off the water. A large fleet of 49 boats enjoyed a pleasant sail in the cool conditions on the bay. The fleet sailed a beat for most of the race and only freed up after the number 18 channel mark. The breeze fluctuated about 10 degrees and varied between 15-20 knots. The clubhouse was abuzz with many of the fleet choosing to say overnight and The Yot and Bar were kept busy. Well done to the four Geelong Boats that represented the RGYC. To see all results, Click HERE

Ladies Networking & Welcome Event: Last Sunday we had almost 70 female members and guests enjoy an afternoon of Networking, Discussions and Discovery. This was a wonderful opportunity to meet fellow female members, share experiences and learn about the activities at the RGYC. Cocktails and Finger Food was served, and thanks must go to Maryanne Fletcher and Ann Zaal for making the Cocktails. This is a great RGYC initiative and congratulations to the organizers for making it such a success. To see more Click HERE

The Yot Café Update: Well, we have survived the first week of operating the Yot Cafe & Bistro. The team, ably led by Nigel, have hit the ground running and we have had a busy week with a big crowd on the weekend from the ORCV for dinner and breakfast. Our new chef is due to start in mid-September and he will review all our menus at that time. In the meantime, we have started making slight adjustments to our menus. We are still working on building our new team and we are experiencing some issues with staffing levels. As a result, the Yot Cafe & Bistro was closed last night.

50 Year Members Lunch: With the lunch fast approaching, we are now looking to get a great guest speaker, so put the date in your diary. Lunch will be held on Friday 16th September, one week before the AFL Grand Final.

Opening Day: Opening Day has been set for Saturday 1st October, planning for the day is underway, so watch this space for more updates.

My Thought of the Week: “At the end of the day people won’t remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel.”  Maya Angelou

Congratulations, Riley!
Ladies Networking & Welcome Event

On Sunday the Club hosted its first RGYC Ladies Networking and Welcome Event with 59 female members and their friends attending.

Christine Couzens MP, State Member for Geelong and Parliamentary Secretary for First Peoples, enjoyed some downtime with the group, and the upcoming Change Our Game program was presented, with quite a few already putting their name down to participate.

Best of luck to RGYC's Susannah Gillham and Andrew Butler, currently competing in the 2022 International Fireball World Championship in Ireland. They are currently 55th out of 79 after six races. Fellow Aussies Heather MacFarlane & Chris Payne are currently second overall.

Final OTB Winter Series Rescheduled

The final OTB Winter Series race day has been rescheduled from Saturday August 27th to Saturday 10th September. The OTB Fleet still requires the help of RGYC members to volunteer for on-water positions to ensure the final race of the Winter Series can go ahead.

If you can offer a hand on Saturday 10th September, please email Andrew Butler at
The Royal Geelong Yacht Club’s annual pre-season OTB regatta is on again after a 2 year hiatus. The event is open to all OTB classes with AS yardsticks and to all sailors, seniors and juniors.

We are seeking expressions of interest for volunteers. Please contact RGYC Reception at if you are available to help

Boating Safety Session
This September, RGYC will be hosting a Boating Safety Session for all boat owners and users of Corio Bay and our surrounding waterways.

As boaters, we are all responsible for our safety on the water, and with the introduction of the Spirit of Tasmania to Corio Bay this coming spring, this is a great opportunity for everyone to stay up to date on what to do in an emergency and how we can ensure Corio Bay is a safe waterway.

This information session will see presentations from Marine Safety Victoria, Australian Volunteer Coast Guard and Country Fire Authority, with the hope that Ports Victoria and the Spirit of Tasmania will also be in attendance.

This Boating Safety Session is proudly sponsored by Boating Central, who will also be providing lucky door prizes on the night.

When: Wednesday, September 14th at 6:30 pm.
Footy Tipping Comp

Fellow tippers,

When you want to make a statement “you do it”!
Well done “Michael Kelly”, on winning this year's footy tipping, but he has done it in style, (tipping 9 this week)!

A call out to others that achieved winning this week's “Top winner”, (9 winners, well done).

Nice try, but not quite good enough?

Congratulations must go to: Bill Lodge for getting to 2nd. Place, and Ingy and Jason equaling for third.

A few others, well a good try, (but not there?).

“Wooden Spoon” goes to David, (if you don’t put your tips in, you will lose?).

To everyone involved with “RGYC Footy Tipping”, Thank you for making a competition.
