Pacific Arabic Late Spring News
Who Is That?
Our Spring 2 Contest
Our last contest had people scratching their heads for days. Here are the answers:
  • Fragmented yet united, many islands yet none: Algeria
  • Holds a berth in two seas at once: Bahrain
The winners were Liza Xydis and Peter Limbrick, both current students. We'd also like to acknowledge Bill Isakson who always participates in our contests even though he's moved away and can't claim a prize.

Now for our new contest: Can you name one of the individuals in the photo above (first and last name), and state where it was taken? There's a clue in the last issue of this newsletter. If you're the first to email us with the correct answer, we'll give you $50 off an eight-week class during the Spring 2 term. Submissions must be received no later than 5pm on March 28. The winners will be notified by March 30. Good luck!

Students Help Syrian Refugees
Many of our students feel compelled to help Syrian refugees, and some have traveled abroad to help directly, putting their Arabic to use.

Lily Kimbel (currently in Advanced Arabic 6) is in Piraeus, Greece, working with Carry the Future. "We meet refugees as they arrive on ferries and fit them with donated baby carriers to help ease their journey. Many, many people are now stuck in makeshift camps at the port, so we've also been visiting those buildings once or twice a day to capture any new arrivals... I've been definitely using my Arabic to try to communicate with the families."

Other students working with refugees include the following: We hope we haven't left anybody out! Please let us know if you're involved in refugee work in Europe, the Middle East or elsewhere.

News from Alums and Others
  • Alison Biondi Khalaf took Arabic classes here in 2012 and 2013, including Summer Intensive Arabic. Since she was last at PAR she's had two sons: Luca (now 23 months old) and Leo, born on January 14. She says, "I'm still keeping up with Lebanese through my husband and his family but want to come back and study Levantine soon."
  • Speaking of Levantine, instructor Rama Karabala is returning from maternity leave next term to teach Levantine 1 and Levantine 3 on Mondays. Her son Namir (pictured below) is now three and a half months old.

  • Photographer Todd Lavine (another recent Fast Track Arabic student) is currently gathering images in Lebanon and Jordan.
  • Heaven El Bacha has taken classes with us on and off since 2009. A belly dancer, she's back at Pacific Arabic preparing for a trip to Egypt where she'll be performing. While abroad she'll also visit her family in Lebanon. "I can't wait to practice my Arabic over there," she tells us.
