December 2017 Edition

District Conferences

Online Testing Updates:
  • Emails to Proctors – Ann has sent all emails to Proctors; if your Proctor has not received their information, please email Ann at
  • Corrections – Please take a minute to review your roster when you receive it from Ann, and email her with any corrections.  We would appreciate any corrections 24 hours before when you are scheduled to test.
  • Additions – We can accommodate any additions.  The information needs to be emailed to Ann at least 24 hours before when they will be testing so they can be entered into the system.
Please remind your proctors the following points:
  • To run the demo test on all computers that you will be using for testing, the day prior to testing to make sure that they properly connect to WebXam.
  • They must remain in the room the entire time that are students are testing.
  • They need to send in the forms once they are done testing all students, not after each day of testing.
Final Chapter Rosters – Once testing has closed, Ann will send your District Conference Roster for you to proof.  Our goal is to send Districts 1 & 8 on Thursday, December 14th and all others by December 18th.

District Conferences Judges – Please remember that each school is required to bring judges to their district conference.  Please email Ann the names of your judges if you have not already done so.
Bronze Merit Award Participants – Please remember to submit the names of your members that have completed the Bronze Level of the Merit Award Program at least a week before your District Conference, so we can announce their names at the Conference.  New this year is a Google Form and can be found at

District Conferences Dress Code – Please take a few minutes to review the Dress Code for the District Conference with your students.  Competitors will be penalized 20 points if they are not properly dressed.  The dress code can be found on page 12 in the Michigan DECA Guide or at
Cell Phones and PDAs:  Cell phones and other smart devices are not to be used during prep time, competition or testing, and must be turned off and out of sight during all competitions and sessions.  Only traditional calculators may be used during online testing if needed.  If a cell phone goes off during prep time or competition, or if one is being used during prep time or competition, the student and/or team will be penalized 20 points.
Competitive Event Updates from National DECA
The following updates and resources are available for competitive events:
  1. Exam Blueprints:  Use this link to get the breakdown of each exam.  Exam Blueprint
  2. The Statement of Assurances & Integrity is now in fillable format.

Membership continues to roll in.  Right now we are about 300 away from last year’s year end membership.  If we have an increase we will receive one additional written event entry at ICDC for every 50 additional member increase.  We will assign any additional allocations to the written events with the most participants.

100% Membership – The foundation of a strong local chapter is for all marketing education students to be afforded the opportunity to become DECA members.  An active DECA chapter recognizes that not all members are able to participate in conferences, but can benefit from local activities. In addition, membership in DECA opens doors to students for a myriad of scholarship opportunities, looks good on a college application, and can be the starting point of a resume for many members.  Chapters are encouraged to have all students enrolled in marketing classes become DECA members – even if they only participate in local activities.

The 100% Membership Reporting Form is required for your chapter to qualify for recognition in Michigan (the check box on the membership roster is not used by Michigan DECA).  Only the students in your marketing classes (not other teachers’), need to be members for your chapter to qualify.  The form is due November 30th, and can be found on page 7 of the Michigan DECA Guide, or can be downloaded at
Below is a list of schools that have submitted their 100% membership form as of November 30, 2017.  If you have not sent your form in yet, please do so this week!

Other Updates

State Officer Candidates – Please encourage qualified members to consider running for a state office.  The candidate information and application have been posted on our webpage: The staff contact is Mike Parr, he can be reached at  Candidate Screening will take place on Saturday, February 3, 2017 in Lansing.
MDA Challenge – Michigan DECA continues its partnership with the Muscular Dystrophy Association this year through our annual MDA Challenge. Last year, we were able to raise over $22,000, with 48 chapters reporting income to the MDA office. This year, the State Officers have set a goal of $40,000! We challenge your chapter to make a difference – if every chapter were to raise just a little, we can easily achieve this goal.

MDA and Michigan DECA will provide recognition for your efforts. All chapters raising more than $200 will be recognized in Spotlight on DECA and on our website. Chapters raising $850 or more will be awarded with a plaque on stage at the State Career Development Conference in March. To begin your MDA activities, call your local MDA office and let them know you are with DECA. To ensure that your monies raised will be created to DECA, use the MDA Fund Verification Form which is posted on:
School Based Enterprise:  You may submit your entry anytime between now and January 12, 2018.

State Conference Housing and Registration Forms – The conference registration forms will be posted by January 16, 2018.  Housing prices will be posted on the Forms page before the holiday break to help you with budgeting and planning.  Remember – Housing Forms will NOT be accepted prior to February 1, 2017, and must be emailed to, not the hotel.  Additional information will be in the January Update.
All State Conference Written Events:
  • Must be included on your State Conference registration form
  • Must turn in one copy in a written event folio for written event screening on February 17, 2018.  Please follow the guidelines in the National DECA Guide for formatting.
  •  Must have an electronic copy uploaded to Michigan DECA’s TurnItIn account during the window of February 5-16, 2018. (Chapter Awards is the only event that will not require an upload to TurnItIn.)  The process to upload your papers will be included in the January and February Director Updates, and will be posted to the Forms page.

We would like to remind everyone of the maximum number for each written event is based on your chapter’s membership.  Below is the chart that was printed on page 65 of the Michigan DECA Guide:
