January 2019 Edition

Thank you for your assistance at your District Conference, we had almost 6,000 members compete at the eight District Conferences!

State Conference

Conference Registrations
State Conference registration is due by February 7, 2019.  You can submit your registration via email to any time prior to the deadline.
Hotel Reservations
We will use the same procedures for housing as last year, which are listed in the housing form.  Housing forms will only be accepted between January 28 and February 7, 2019.   This is to allow advisors more time to proof their housing list so the hotel has less changes to process, and in turn able to more effectively allocate and block rooms for our chapters.  Michigan DECA will assign your chapter to a hotel on February 8, 2019.  The hotel will email you an invoice that has the amount due for your lodging by February 15, 2019.  The payment is due to the hotel by March 1, 2019.
Conference Registration Payment Extension Form
State Conference Registration Payments are due on February 20, 2019.
Because we rely on your prompt payment of registration fees so that we can pay conferences expenses in a timely manner, we will have to assess late fees for payments received after the deadline.  We understand that some schools take time to process invoices, so we have a Payment Extension Form that will give you two additional weeks to pay without late fees.  To receive the extension, the form MUST be received by February 6, 2019.  Also note, the same procedure needs to be followed for any schools paying by a Purchase Order if the payment will not be received by the deadline of February 20, 2019.
Online Testing for the State Conference
The online testing window for the State Conference will be Wednesday February 20 to Wednesday, February 27, 2019.  A new Proctor Registration Form is required to be submitted to our office, even if you are using the same Proctor as you did during the District Conference.  We strongly urge you to select two testing dates as early in the testing window as possible.   Any students that do not test online will not be able to attend the State Conference.  No testing may take place after February 27.
Ethics Team Event
In conjunction with the MBA Research Center, Michigan will pilot an Ethics Team Event at the State Conference.  This event is for a team of two seniors.  Details of the event are being finalized and will be posted by Monday, January 21, 2019.  Please note that this event will NOT advance on to the International Conference.

Special Accommodations
A special needs form needs to be completed if a student requires a special accommodation by a student’s IEP.  The form can be found at  Even if you have filled one out for the District Conference, you will need to submit another one for the State Conference.  This form must be received by February 20, 2019.
Tentative State Conference Program
Will be posted in February.  A list of when each event will compete has been posted to
Student Event Orientation
Remember, all students are required to attend their event orientation at the State Conference.  They will get their event schedule, and they will learn the procedures for competition.  We can only excuse students for an official school-related conflict.  The form can be found at   We are sorry, but we cannot assign students to special times if it is not a school related activity or if the form is not signed by a school administrator. This form must be received by March 6.
State Conference Alternates
We are working on emailing the finalists and alternates lists from the District Conferences last week - they will be sent this week.  Remember that if you have a student that qualified to attend the State Conference and they are not attending, you need to contact the next school on the list in the same section as your student, as soon as possible.  Advisor contact information was sent with the results from your District Conference.

Written Events

Written Event Screening
Will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2019, in Roosevelt Hall at Eastern Michigan University.  The screening will start at 10:00 a.m.  Please do not arrive prior to 9:30 a.m.  If you are going to use a GPS/navigation app, use 522 College Place as the street address, which will take you to the Pease Hall paid parking lot.
NEW:  Written Event Parking
EMU now charges for parking on the weekend.  We will provide parking validation at no cost for everyone that pre-orders one when they register for the State Conference.  Because we have to pre-pay for the parking validations, and they are non-refundable, we will have to charge everyone that orders one but does not use it $5.00.  The validations will be good for the Pease Hall paid parking lot.  If you do not pre-order a parking pass, parking is $1.50 per hour.
Michigan DECA requires all written projects (except for the Chapter Awards Program) to be uploaded our TurnItIn account between February 6 and 10:00 a.m. on February 16.  Complete information on this process will be in the February update.
Michigan DECA Advisors’ Council established policy:  All written entries (including the Gold Merit Award and Chapter Awards Programs) must be received in the proper folio/binder by 10:00 a.m. on February 16. Events will not be accepted after 10:30 a.m.  Advisors are not allowed to make any corrections to the projects once they arrive.  So please take a few minutes to be sure that they are complete before you arrive.

Please follow these procedures if you plan to ship your written events:
  1. Use this address:  Michigan DECA/EMU, 208 King Hall, Ypsilanti, Michigan  48197
  2. We strongly recommend using UPS to send your packages.  They deliver directly to our office, and all packages can be tracked to see where they are in transit.
  3. All mail and packages sent by the postal service are sent to the EMU mailroom for sorting first, and do not get delivered to our office until the next business day. (Mail and packages that arrive on Friday will not be delivered to our office until Monday)
  4. We do NOT receive ANY shipments or deliveries on Saturday, even if you have paid extra for this service with a carrier.
  5. All shipped packages should be sent to be received by Wednesday, February 13, 2019, in case they need to be re-routed.  Packages scheduled to be received after this date run the risk of not arriving on time, and not being able to be screened for competition.
Also remember that the Written Event Statement of Assurances must be completely filled-in (typed) and inserted in the front of each entry.  Only students that have signed the Statement of Assurances Form will be allowed to compete in that event. Even if a student’s name is typed on the form, but they fail to sign it, they will not be allowed to compete in that event, and will be dropped.
Additional information can be found in the competitive events section of the Michigan DECA Guide:
Merit Awards Program
The MAP reporting form must be received by February 1, 2019, for students to be recognized for all completed levels.  Certificates will be mailed after the State Conference.  Link to the form is

MDA Challenge
Michigan DECA is continuing its partnership with the Muscular Dystrophy Association this year through our annual MDA Challenge.  Last year, we were able to raise over $22,000 with 48 chapters reporting in to our office.  This year, the State Officers have set an ambitious goal of $35,000!!!  We challenge your chapter to make a difference.  If every chapter were to raise just a little, we can easily achieve this goal.  February 28, 2019 is the deadline to be recognized at the State Conference.

A list of chapters that have reported MDA donations as of December 23 has been posted to

January 31, 2019
Payment Deadline for State Conference Housing Rankings.  We will use the number of paid members as of January 31, 2019 to determine the order that each school is ranked within their district for the order that they will be assigned to a hotel.  If you have any outstanding membership payments, please check with your bookkeeper to make sure that DECA receives your payment by January 31, 2019.
March 1, 2019
Final membership deadline to be eligible to attend the International Conference.  All memberships must be submitted and paid by March 1, 2019.  Please take a few minutes to be sure that every student that paid membership fees or attended a DECA conference this year has had their memberships submitted to National DECA.  Membership additions and payment are due to National DECA Prior to March 1, 2019.
