We wish everyone a great DECA Month! – We would like to encourage everyone to be recognized for their DECA Month Activities by entering them in DECA Promotional Campaign. Complete information can be found at http://www.deca.org/high-school-programs/high-school-chapter-campaigns/ Remember the deadline to submit your activities is December 1, 2017.
Central Region Leadership Conference – Nebraska DECA will host the conference this year on December 1-3, in Omaha. The conference will be attended by over 1,100 participants from the 12 other Chartered Associations. The registration Deadline has been extended to November 6, 2017. Since Michigan will be hosting this conference in 2018, we have received financial support for two additional schools to attend to receive $500.00 in assistance for an advisor that attends with students and serves on our planning committee for next year’s conference. Additional information can be found at http://mideca.org/teachers/forms/
The rosters have been coming in; if you have not submitted yours, please do so today!
Remember – The number of qualifiers from each district that will advance on to the State Conference is determined by the number of PAID members that each District has on November 30th. Please take a few minutes and make sure that your check request has been submitted so that National DECA receives your payment by November 30th.
Chapters can add members until February 28th – But the sooner that they are submitted the sooner you can begin receiving benefits.
Membership by the numbers, as of October 31st…
- 119 of our 167 chapters have submitted their rosters
- 5 are new chapters
- 48 chapters still need to submit their membership
- 6,281 members have been submitted
- 451 people have been entered but not yet submitted
- 37 chapters that have submitted their membership and qualify for the “Gimmie 5” Membership Award!
- 12 chapters have increased their membership by less than 5 – They still have time to add members to receive the Gimmit5! Award
Welcome New Chapters – The following new chapters have already submitted memberships, and there are several others still in the membership recruitment process:
- Detroit Osborn High School
- Eaton RESA Career Prep Center
- Frankenmuth High School
- Gabriel Richard High School (Riverview)
- Michael Berry Center (Dearborn)
Gimmie 5! – Michigan DECA is challenging each chapter to recruit just 5 more members than they had last year. Each chapter that accomplishes this challenge will receive a recognition plaque at the State Conference. We also encourage you to participate in National DECA’s membership campaign to double your recognition.
Added Incentive for the Gimmie 5! Award Recipients:
To chapters that increase both their membership AND district conference participation by FIVE members, Michigan DECA will provide a $250 credit off from the District Conference Registration fees. The process to receive this credit is simple. All a chapter needs to do is to achieve the steps below:
The numbers needed for each chapter to qualify for this incentive credit have been posted to: http://mideca.org/teachers/incentivefordistrictregistrationcredit/
100% Membership – The foundation of a strong local chapter is for all marketing education students to be afforded the opportunity to become DECA members. An active DECA chapter recognizes that not all members are able to participate in conferences, but can benefit from local activities. In addition, membership in DECA opens doors to students for a myriad of scholarship opportunities, is impressive on a college application, and is the highlight on a resume for many members. Chapters are encouraged to have all students enrolled in marketing classes become DECA members – whether they participate in conferences, or in local activities.
The 100% Membership Reporting Form is required for your chapter to qualify for recognition in Michigan (the check box on the membership roster is not used by Michigan DECA). Only students in your marketing classes (not other teachers’ classes in your school) need to be members for your chapter to qualify for 100% membership. The form is due November 30th, and can be found on page 7 of the Michigan DECA Guide, or can be downloaded at http://mideca.org/teachers/forms/
Chapter Campaigns – we encourage you to participate in DECA’s chapter campaigns. The top recognition for this year is the ability for chapters to bring up to 3 students to ICDC in Atlanta to participate in DECA’s THRIVE Academy. Information on the campaigns was mailed by DECA in your September Chapter Packet, and can also be found online at: http://mideca.org/members/membership/decacampaigns/

Important District Conference Dates:

November 17 – Registration Deadline
December 1-12 – Online Testing Window
A complete list of the conference dates can be found at http://mideca.org/conferences/district-conferences/
District Conference Event Scenarios - DECA has posted the district level scenario instructional areas. The intent of this is to help advisors and members prepare for district competitions more effectively. District competitions often begin early in the school year before advisors have had opportunities to cover all of the instructional areas in the curriculum. By announcing the instructional areas in advance, members can focus on the instructional areas they’ll be assessed on at their first level of competition each school year. They can be found here: http://www.decadirect.org/2017/09/29/2017-2018-district-event-instructional-areas-announced/
Online Comprehensive Testing for District Conferences - All Districts will test online, as in years past. Please take a few minutes to review the information on our website and on page 41 of the Michigan DECA Guide, so that you can secure your testing dates. We encourage you to send in your Proctor Form as soon as you have your Proctor and testing dates confirmed. This will allow Ann to process your information before she has to process registrations for the 6,000+ members that will be testing online this year.
Online testing will take place December 1-12 for students competing at all of the District Conferences. No testing may take place after December 12th, so we recommend using the 12th only as a make-up day. I would encourage all teachers to work with their school principal to set the dates for your school and to reserve a computer lab or two in your school.
Chapters in Districts 1, and 8: since your District Conferences are in December, we encourage you to test your students during the first week of the online testing window, so we can download the test data and prepare the database for your conference more efficiently.
Payment Option for Online Testing – Michigan DECA is encouraging chapters to talk to their administrators about using Perkins or Added Cost Funds to pay for the online testing component of the District Conferences. See page 39 of the Michigan DECA Guide for more information. We can send separate invoices for testing fees and conference registration costs to those chapters that wish to use this payment option.
Conference Information - can be found at http://mideca.org/conferences/district-conferences/. Each district has its own webpage with specific conference information and maps.
Registration information – Links to the registration forms can be found at http://mideca.org/teachers/forms/. New for this year, you’ll be directed to a Google Form to acknowledge some conference policies before given the link to download the registration form. Please download the various memos and review them before the conference, so we can run the conferences as smoothly as possible. Please contact Ann Day in the office or at email@example.com if you need any assistance.
Bronze Merit Award Participants – Please remember to submit the names of your members that have completed the Bronze Level of the Merit Award Program at least a week before your District Conference. New this year is a Google Form instead of a PDF form, and can be found at http://mideca.org/teachers/forms/ under the Competitive Event Forms heading. We will announce submitted names at their District Conference.
Sports and Entertainment Marketing Workshop –The workshop will be held on November 29, at the brand new Little Caesars Arena. The registration Deadline is November 15, 2017. After that date, registrations will be accepted on a space available basis and will be charged a late fee per person. The registration form and additional information can be found at http://mideca.org/teachers/forms/
State Officer Candidates – Please encourage qualified members to consider running for a state office. The candidate information and application have been posted on our webpage: http://mideca.org/members/running/ The staff contact is Mike Parr, he can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org Candidate Screening will take place on Saturday, February 3, 2017 in Lansing.
MDA Challenge – Michigan DECA continues its partnership with the Muscular Dystrophy Association this year through our annual MDA Challenge. Last year, we were able to raise over $22,000, with 48 chapters reporting income to the MDA office. This year, the State Officers have set a goal of $40,000! We challenge your chapter to make a difference – if every chapter were to raise just a little, we can easily achieve this goal.
MDA and Michigan DECA will provide recognition for your efforts. All chapters raising more than $200 will be recognized in Spotlight on DECA and on our website. Chapters raising $850 or more will be awarded with a plaque on stage at the State Career Development Conference in March. To begin your MDA activities, call your local MDA office and let them know you are with DECA. To ensure that your monies raised will be created to DECA, use the MDA Fund Verification Form which is posted on: http://mideca.org/members/mda/
State Officer Request - You should have received an email from the State Officer working with your district asking you to nominate two of your members or chapter officers that you feel would be good to serve on Michigan DECA’s District Council. The District Council has been established for each chapter to connect with our State Officer team to stay up to date with Michigan DECA's programs and conferences, as well as the fun contests or promotions we have throughout the year. It is our goal for each school to have two representatives to be a member of our District Council. If your school has their own board or executive council, we find that having those leaders on the District Council is most effective, since they are DECA leaders at the school and can inform members of the information they receive. Would you please forward the following link to your two District Council Representatives so they can provide their contact information? http://mideca.org/members/districtcouncil/
Once the officers receive their information, they will be sent monthly updates about the activities going on during that month, and will be invited to our District Council livestreams. This is a very exciting opportunity for students to be directly engaged with Michigan DECA between conferences, and it will give them another activity to add on their college applications!
Congratulations to these chapters that have already achieved enough to receive the Gimmie 5 Award!
