 AWARD  Staff members at the Department of Chemical Engineering received six President's Medals and Awards this year for excellence in education and research. Read more

2. Students

 FINISHED  Congratulations to the ChemEng Class of 2016 on finishing their final exams! Read more and see all the pictures from the final year party
 PICTURES  The Department of Chemical Engineering ran an image competition to brighten up the department. Congratulations to the overall winners: Krista Hyer, Robert Hart, Marie Bachelet, Shiqi Wang. Read more
 ENTREPRENEUR  PhD student Clementine Chambon continues to receive international acclaim. She was featured in the Forbes "30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneurs" and in the MIT Technology Review "Innovators under 35" lists for her achievements as the co-founder of Oorja.
 AWARD  The Chemical Engineering PhD representatives were awarded the Union Award for the best Postgraduate Academic Network of the Year. Read more
 CONFERENCE  Emilie Lunddahl and Wouter Thijssen recently attended the SB3C conference to present their research project titled: "Mathematical Modelling of Oxygen Transport in the Retina" and were placed 4th in the student paper competition. Read more
 EXTRA  In recognition of their extra-curricular activities, Vatsal Shah and Justin Yong were awarded the annual Old Centralians' Trust Awards by the City & Guilds College Association. Read more
 SPORT  Congratulations to Liem Bui-Le, who became the Sportsman of the Year at the Imperial Sports Awards! Liem won the University Championship in U85kg weightlifting in April.
 SYMPOSIUM  PhD students showcased their work at our annual PhD Symposium. The day-long event was opened by a distinguished seminar and included a series of oral presentations, a poster session and a closing drinks reception. Read more

3. Alumni

 #OURIMPERIAL  As part of the annual Imperial Festival / Alumni Weekend, the Department organised a special day for ChemEng Alumni: departmental and pilot plant tours as well as a drinks reception and fun activities for chemical engineers of the future (pictured). Read more

4. Research News

 MEMBRANES  The research team led by Professor Andrew Livingston have developed a new synthetic method for producing molecularly designed polymer membranes that has the potential to make chemical separation processes up to two orders of magnitude more efficient than using conventional membranes.  #IMSE  The new Institute for Molecular Science and Engineering which aims to fast-track the development of molecular engineering research was officially launched last month. Read more
 LIGNIN  New review paper published in Angewandte Chemie by Dr Roberto Rinaldi looks at the value of emerging technologies of lignin biorefining processes for production of renewable fuels, chemicals & materials. Read more
 IONIC LIQUIDS  A paper by Dr Jason Hallett and Dr Alex Brogan published in JACS presents the first ever example of dry enzymes modified to dissolve in dry ionic liquids. Read more
 CELLS  A review article in Chemical Society Reviews by Dr Andrew Chan & Professor Sergei Kazarian represents a fundamental development in how we analyse live cells. Read more
 CCS  A white paper by the Sustainable Gas Institute suggests that if carbon capture and storage technology can be refined, it will enable the world to use more of its unburnable carbon. Read more

5. Awards & Appointments

 LIQUID  An image of water rotating in what appears to be slow motion is one of the winning entries in the National Science Photography competition organised by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. The picture was taken by Professor Omar Matar and his team as part of their research into liquid jets. Read more
 MEDAL   Congratulations to Emeritus Professor Geoff Hewitt on receiving the Imperial College Medal recognising his outstanding contributions to the life and work of the College.
 FELLOWSHIP  Dr Bradley Ladewig has been named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
 ALTHEA  Congratulations to Florence Gschwend on winning the 2016 Althea-Imperial Runner-up Prize! Read more
 ICHEME MEDALS  Congratulations to Professor Sakis Mantalaris on winning the IChemE Donald Medal, Professor Constantinos Pantelides on winning the IChemE Sargent Medal and Professor Roger Sargent on winning the IChemE MM Sharma Medal! Read more
 EDUCATION  Dr Umang Shah has been named a Fellow and Andrew Macey has Associate Fellow of the Higher Educations Academy.
 DEVELOPMENT  Dr Christos Markides is the lead investigator on a recently awarded Programme Grant “Harnessing unsteady phase-change heat exchange in high-performance concentrated solar power systems”, funded by the Royal Society-Department for International Development Africa Capacity Building Initiative.

 PHD  Recent PhD graduate Dr Cheng Peng has been awarded the Qatar Petroleum Medal for his PhD research on ‘Chemical Interactions between Carbon Dioxide Acidified Aqueous Fluids and Carbonate Minerals’. His PhD was supervised by Professor Martin Trusler and Professor Geoffrey Maitland.

 WAKEHAM  Congratulations to Dr Patrizia Marchetti and Dr Agnieszka Brandt-Talbot on winning this year’s Sir William Wakeham award! Read more
 ADSORPTION  Congratulations to Dr Ronny Pini on receiving a prestigious award from the International Adsorption Society for research excellence. Read more

 THESIS  Dr Lisa Kleiminger was awarded joint first place for her PhD Thesis entitled "Solid Oxide Electrochemical Reactors and Processes for Carbon Dioxide and Water Splitting" at the Royal Society of Chemistry Energy Sector PhD Thesis Award Competition 2015.

 ENTREPRENEURS   Recent MSc alumnus Ioannis Tzouganatos was part of a team that won the Mayor of London Low Carbon Entrepreneur Competition for their creation Featherfill, a composite insulating material created from feather waste. Read more
 MEMBRANE  Dr Patrizia Marchetti has been awarded the prestigious North American Membrane Society (NAMS) Young Membrane Scientist Award. Read more

 PRESENTATION  Recent MSc graduate Qi Chen’s talk was selected as best presentation of his session (Application of Quality by Design in Drug Product Formulation Design & Process Development) at the annual AIChE meeting.

6. Around the Department

 NEW STAFF  Dr Gonzalo Guillén-Gosálbez has joined us as a Reader in Process Systems Engineering from the University of Manchester and will continue his research on optimisation of chemical systems. Read the interview

 MARATHON   Congratulations to Hannah Taylor, our Postgraduate and CPD Administrator, on completing the London Marathon and raising an impressive £1870 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

 ARRIVALS  We would like to offer our warmest wishes to three couples who recently welcomed new arrivals to their families. Congratulations to Christos Markides and his partner Luisa on the birth of their baby daughter Aemilia Nicola, congratulations to Benoit Chachuat and his partner Jessica on the birth of their baby son Thomas and congratulations to João Cabral and his partner Matt on the births of their babies Martha and Thomas.

7. Events

 POSTDOC  Cutting-edge research at the Department was showcased at the Postdoc Symposium on 18 April with Dame Julia Higgins delivering the keynote address. Read more
 #IMPFEST  The Department of Chemical Engineering welcomed the general public as well as returning alumni at this year's Imperial Festival. Read more

 POLYMERS  IMSE and the Royal Academy of Engineering are hosting a one-day symposium bringing together staff and students working on polymer thermodynamics, theory/modelling, blends, demixing, membranes and glasses. 22 July 2016 in Chem Eng LT2. Registration details

#TMF20Y  The Department is hosting the 20th anniversary conference of the Consortium on Transient and Complex Multiphase Flows and Flow Assurance (TMF). 13 September 2016, talks in Chem Eng LT1. More information on the conference website
