A LOOK BACK & A LOOK AHEAD

LOOKING BACK - FIRST QUARTER 2016 SNAPSHOT REPORT

PMDAlliance values transparency. In fact, we recognize transparency as one of our fundamental values: transparency is a cornerstone of trust (to see all of our guiding principles. click here) We reference our guiding principles in everything we do, and transparency means we want our program participants, donors and the public to know not only what we do, but also how we do it.

It’s been less than 5 months since PMDAlliance was born. Conceived with a determined intention to create programs and events that enhance the daily lives of the many people we touch, we develop and deliver programs that make it easier for you to learn about how to live optimally, no matter whether you are a person with Parkinson’s or another movement disorder, a care partner or family member.

We respect you in your totality as a person who despite the challenges and struggles you encounter, seeks the best out of every day. In addition to offering opportunities for you to hear the latest research and medical information, we honor your desire to stay active and connect with others in relaxed, comfortable and social settings. Our focus is on your well being. First you, then the disease.

Thank you to the more than 1,000 people who have participated in our programs and events over the first few months of this year.  Here is a peek at the information on our Quarter One Snapshot Report:

LOOKING AHEAD

Our monthly E-News now includes a Save the Date section.  With more than 10 conferences occurring across the state – there’s something for everyone and we want you to know about all of them.

Over the next three months we’ll roll out two programs that have been in pilot phase - Move It!™ (online exercise streaming) and Inside Scoop!™ (a searchable database for tips, tools and tricks to make everyday life easier).

As much as you look to our events to find new information, ideas and attitudes, we look to you to learn more about what you value about PMDAlliance, what’s helpful, what unmet needs you’d like us to consider. Our value is determined by how well we positively impact you in your daily life. Your input, feedback and support keep us heading in the right direction. We are with you on this journey.
GETTING GOOD AT GETTING OLD
We planned when we were younger... don't stop now!

Aging is a life-long process and no one is exempt. Getting good at getting old starts right now, no matter what your age. Unless we continue to exert effort as we get older, we’re most likely to do what we’ve always done. Knowing that brain plasticity slows with age, it’s all the more important that we establish good mental and physical habits long before plasticity significantly diminishes.

PARKINSON'S AND SURGERY:
Careful Planning, Safe Choices

Surgery can be daunting for anyone.  If you or a loved one has Parkinson disease, it can be even more challenging.  The most important thing to realize is that not all medical professionals know the ins and outs of medication interactions when to comes to Parkinson's. You are your own best advocate.  Print this article out and take it to your surgeon, dentist, any pre-op appointment, and take a copy with you on the day of the surgery.  I have written it with medical professionals in mind.

AWARE IN CARE HOSPITAL KIT AVAILABLE
AT NO COST TO YOU

Did you know that three out of four people with Parkinson’s disease do not receive their medications on time when staying in the hospital? People with Parkinson’s visit hospitals more often, and, combined with the great importance of the timing and dosing of Parkinson’s medications, face greater risks in the hospital.

This is why the National Parkinson Foundation (NPF) has launched the Aware in Care program.  The free Aware in Care kit with tools and information to share with hospital staff during a planned or emergency hospital stay. The kit is large enough to fit your Parkinson’s medications to take with you on your next trip to the hospital.  The Aware in Care kit can be requested at www.awareincare.org or by calling 1-800-4PD-INFO (473-4636).

RENEW RETREAT

Nearly everyone with PD has or will have a care partner. Care partners need support and care too! Our signatire Renew! retreat, September 17-18th  at the Westward Look Resort & Spa in Tucson, AZ, promises to honor, support  & invigorate care partners, sending you home more relaxed, less stressed & feeling good.  The May e-news will have in-depth information about the retreat.

LIVING WELL  WITH PD

PMDAlliance's mantra is you first, then the disease. Knowing that you are more than your disease, we host monthly Get Out! casual dinners in Phoenix, Tucson and Prescott.  These events include a time to connect with new and old friends.  Because we believe you deserve a break from PD, some months are social while others include a speaker.  We hope you'll join us this month.
CARE PARTNER CORNER

Sleep is tough for people with PD... and their care partners.  However, good sleep is just as important for the care partner as it is for the person with PD. Did you know that re-search shows that fewer than 6 hours of sleep results in the same problems as having no sleep.  While not an easy task, caring for yourself is essential, and that includes good sleep.
