The Parkinson's Ecosystem!
I'm guessing that you probably haven't heard about the Parkinson or Movement Disorder ecosystem, probably because it isn't a term per se. It's the framework that PMDAlliance developed and uses when building our programs, our website, and our events. At its core, it expresses our dedication to ensuring that everyone impacted by Parkinson's has the information and support they need.

An ecosystem is defined as a complex network or interconnected system. We believe every person living with Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, MDA, PSP, and other movement disorders is part of a complex network of interconnected support.  While the person living with Parkinson's or another movement disorder is at the center of their ecosystem, living well despite the disease includes many other people.  To take a look at the PMDAlliance Movement Disorder ecosystem click here.

This newsletter is dedicated to increasing awareness about some components of the Parkinson's or other movement disorders ecosystem for various members of the ecosystem, as well as the support and services available them.

PMDAlliance offers 75+ programs and events this year, so keep an eye on our newsletters and e-mails. Stay informed and ensure you don't miss out!  Get involved.  Be part of the PMDAlliance community.  We're on this journey with you.

Live fully!

Lunch With Docs™  APRIL 26, 2017
Every 4th Wednesday of the month, PMDAlliance hosts a FREE brown bag Lunch With Docs™ from Noon - 1:00 PM,  Arizona time (currently MST). With varied topics discussed by an array of physician experts, these informal conversations with movement disorder neurologists will provide a forum for you to learn, ask questions, interact and be part of a community, regardless of where you live.

This month, join us April 26th for a conversation with Cynthia Reed, MD to learn about digestion and constipation issues in PD as well as practical tips to help ease the issues.

If you missed March's Lunch with Docs™, you can watch the discussion on our PMDAlliance YouTube! Channel,  Click here

Movement Disorder Specialist

Do you know the difference between a general neurologist and a movement disorder specialist?

General neurologists treat more than 100 neurological conditions. Movement disorder specialists are neurologists who have completed an additional course of education beyond general neurology and training specifically to treat patients with diagnoses of Parkinson's and Huntington's, essential tremor, dystonia, and various Parkinsonisms. They keep abreast of new and potential treatments and medications and can address each patient's care needs with specialized expertise.

PMDAlliance encourages every person with a movement disorder to see a neurologist who specialized in movement disorders, at least annually.  If you are looking for a movement disorder neurologist near you, we maintain a list of our Movement Disorder Neurologist advisors on our website.  Click the button below to visit the website.

Think your kids are too busy to attend a conference designed just for them?  Think they wouldn't want to go?  You may want to think again.  Here's what we've heard from people who have already registered:
"I had no idea where to go to ask my questions. I google everything but don't know if it's reliable information. I don't want to burden my mom and dad. They're already stressed. I'm so excited to be coming to this conference."  - Jan, 38

"My two brothers and I are coming together. I'm flying in Friday and we'll spend the weekend together. I think this will help us make our visits and holidays even more special because we'll understand more about my mom."  - Mary, 44

"I keep trying to figure out how to help and have no idea. I know my parents don't think I have time. What they don't know is that I think about my dad and his Parkinson's ALL the time."  - John. 52

"My dad is only 57. I wonder what this mean for me. I'm looking forward to a safe space to talk."  - Cindy, 27

Last month we gathered with more than 100 people with Parkinson disease and their care partners for a Renew! Retreat in Irvine.  In addition to sharing with others who truly understand, participants heard from several movement disorder physicians.  This video is part 1 of Dr. Mindy Bixby's talk, "Building A Better You".

PMDAlliance's mantra is you first, then the disease. Knowing that you are more than your disease, our monthly Get Out! casual dinners in Phoenix, Tucson and Prescott include a time to connect with new and old friends.  Get Out! events are more than fun; they're based in science demonstrating how important socializing is for aging brains. And they're free!
