New measures to help grow Australia’s civil space sector

Australia and the US will build on over 60 years of space collaboration by commencing negotiations on a bilateral Technology Safeguards Agreement (TSA).

The Government is also deferring the introduction of partial cost recovery for applications submitted under the Space (Launches and Returns) Act 2018 for another 12 months.

Modern Manufacturing Initiative space grants announced
Four space companies will share in nearly $14 million in funding, under round one of the Integration and Translation streams of the Modern Manufacturing Initiative. The Modern Manufacturing Initiative is the centrepiece of the Government’s $1.5 billion Modern Manufacturing Strategy, designed to position Australia as a globally recognised, high-quality and sustainable manufacturing nation. Modern Manufacturing Initiative Collaboration Stream guidelines released
The guidelines for the Collaboration Stream of the Modern Manufacturing Initiative have been released, with funding between $20 million and $200 million available for large-scale projects. Space projects are eligible. This funding will cover up to 33 per cent of eligible project expenditure. Applications can be lodged between 11 August and 9 September. Read more.

Congratulations to Spiral Blue
Australian startup, Spiral Blue, has successfully launched the first prototype Space Edge Zero computers into orbit onboard Virgin Orbit’s air-to-space LauncherOne rocket. Read more.

Agency signs MOU with Queensland
On 28 June 2021, the Australian Space Agency signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Queensland Government. It focuses on supporting industry and leveraging the existing start-up ecosystem, as well as collaborating with government and developing skills and workforce capability. Read more.

Supply Chain Capability Improvement Grants intake three
The Australian Space Agency’s Moon to Mars Supply Chain Capability Improvement Grants supports Australian businesses with a demonstrated domestic and/or international space supply chain opportunity. There are three intakes per year, and the next intake closes on 5 August 2021. Read more.
