We did it -let's move forward now!

Good morning, San Juan County Democrats.  Thank all of you for getting out the vote that helped award New Mexico's electoral votes to our President and Vice President Elects Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.  I know I joined in our collective sigh of relief on Saturday when the determinative tally was announced.  It is a time of great change in our country, and our own county Party is no exception.  I have decided to step down, as of November 4, 2020, as Chair of the Democratic Party of San Juan County.

I have some health concerns, and will be having hip surgery at the end of this month.  It is time for me to focus on personal healing, just as the nation focuses on healing the horrendous injury inflicted upon our Democracy by the outgoing President.

Our Party is in excellent shape financially, with approximately $8000 in our bank account.  This, after we contributed to these Democratic candidates:

DPNM                             $1000
Xochitl Torres Small        $500
Ben Ray Lujan                $500
Harold Pope, Jr.              $500
Anthony Allison               $500
Shannon Pinto                $500
Pam Cordova                  $500
Neomi Martinez Parra     $500
Siah Correah Hemphill    $500
Carrie Hamblen               $500
Amy McGrath (KY)          $500
Jaime Harrison (SC)       $500
Jon Ossoff (GA)               $500
Sara Gideon (ME)           $500
Mark Kelly (AZ)               $500
Raphael Warnock (GA)   $500

Although at present, Democrats still do not have a US Senate majority, it is my hope that our contributions to the two Georgia Senate candidates helped in some small way to propel them into the runoff elections to be held in that state on January 5, 2021.  Due in large part to the work of Stacey Abrams and others, Georgia will probably become a Blue state.  I applaud their dedication.  If Ossoff and Warnock win their runoff contests, then the combination of Mark Kelly, Ossoff and Warnock will join Vice President Harris as an effective Democratic voting bloc in the Senate, and we will have the ability to once again introduce legislation to move our country forward  in the progressive direction that will restore the safety and prosperity of the United States.

The coming year brings a chance for all of us NM Democrats to adjust to our new virtual world, and become more effective in understanding how to meet and enjoy Zoom events.  Our next election convention, to be held sometime in early 2021, will almost certainly be conducted via the internet.  I urge all of you to participate in this form of Democracy, even though it may require learning new ways of meeting and voting.  I am sure our interim Chair, who is Damian Artalejo, 602-814-3931, will do his best to assist all members of the DPSJC to become fully participatory.

In closing, I want to thank all of you for the trust and cooperation you have shown me for the past 3 terms of my service as your Vice Chair and Chair.  I feel confident that our Party will continue to increase its diversity as well as its unity, and finally, in the near future, reflect the actual population of San Juan County.  Once we accomplish this goal, turning our home Blue cannot be far behind. May we all be blessed by the many gifts of our Creator and work diligently together, without rancor, to reflect the Love we all receive.

With love and thanks,

MP Schildmeyer
