<<First Name>>,
Who is the gray man you might be asking? He's the guy who maintains his ability to do work while blending in and being a non-threatening part of his environment. This is especially important in a non-permissive environment where the "meat eating" type of citizen is not necessarily welcome.
How does one become a gray man is another question you might be asking? That, actually is both simpler and harder than it might seem. First a couple stories about making a slight mistake and getting called out.
- one of our partners had several instances of being asked in a big box store where he deployed to because of his choice of shoe. He was wearing Lowa Zephyr Desert boots at the time and had always been a civilian.
- one of our friends was complimented about his Magpul baseball cap by the gate attendants at Disney World and then got some extra scrutiny getting into the park.
When being out the world, expect that the average security guard will be able to identify "cool guy" gear and clothing. This means jackets with shoulder patches, baseball caps with patches, assault boots, 5.11 pants and other "high-speed operator" type clothing should be avoided. Getting burned for being an obvious "dude who likely has a gun" doesn't help you, your friends, your family or your team.
To be the gray man, first figure out the expected dress code for where you are going. For example, don't wear blue to an Ohio State game. But don't wear a James Bond tuxedo either. Or a 5.11 tactical tuxedo either. Wear your OSU ball-cap, buckeye's hoodie, jeans and trainers and you can fit right in and appear under the radar of everyone around you.
Here's some easy things to do better be the gray man when out and about.
- Don't wear the photographers/IDPA vest. 2003 called and want's the Bremer detail uniform back. Likewise, dress appropriate for the weather. Heavy jackets call lots of attention when it's 90 degrees and sunny.
- Ensure that your tools are concealed and move with you as you move about. Have a trusted friend ensure that you don't print when sitting down, leaning, tying a shoe, stretching, etc.
- Wear outer layers work with the environment that you are in.
- Keep logos, branding, t-shirt sayings, etc completely non-tactical, non-firearms related.
- When it comes to avoiding people who are looking for people like you, wear the civilian side of Lowa, Asolo, Salomon, Arcteryx, Oakley, and other outdoor brands that have both a .mil and a civilian product line.
- Leave the packs covered in MOLLE webbing at home.
- Avoid clothing with colors in coyote, OD green, ranger green and wolf-gray. Likewise, Multicam, Kryptek and other "high-speed" camo should be avoided. In rural areas, Realtree™ and other hunting camo may help to blend in with the locals.
- Be a hard target without looking like a hard target. Sitting with your back to a wall and glaring at everyone who walks into the room isn't going to win you friends and most likely will draw extra attention.
Being in a position to help your family, friends and teammates means being with them when things actually go south. You're not able to do that if you've been put in the penalty box for drawing attention to your self or made yourself a high priority target for any potential bad guys.
The highest speed guys we know are almost always the least likely to present themselves that way. If you have them a studied look, you would have no idea who they worked for or what they did for a day job.
Keep things concealed.
Be covert.
Be a ghost.
Be the gray man.
Prevail.
