Cap City Outfitters is Central Ohio's personal and family defense HQ.
<<First Name>>,

As responsibly armed citizens, it is our responsibility to be able to deliver as advertised cold and on demand. It's generally easy to do that in the nice confines of a proper range when we are in good spirits. It's another to deliver as advertised when we are exhausted and soggy, it's dark, the temperature is 35 degrees and thunder-sleet is blowing sideways.

It's in these moments and conditions that the person who as truly mastered their skill set will shine. That person will have automatic access to the hard skills they need to win the engagement. Being able to run the gun at the subconscious competence level of performance allows this person to also devote attention to the opponent, available terrain features, and getting inside the opponent's Observe Orient Decide Act (OODA) loop.

The question then becomes how do we over develop hard skills in running the gun so that those hard skills are available cold and on demand. Simply, with an old school blue collar work ethic devoted to intentional, disciplined practice.

We recommend starting with competently taught instruction so that bad technique isn't introduced or can be remediated before it becomes ingrained. After that it is simply a matter of practicing the skills until the total skill is executed via a thought vs needing to think through each step of the skill. This for pistol shooting this includes stance, grip, drawing the pistol, sight picture, and pulling the trigger. It's not exciting, but these skills need to be developed to the point where they simply happen perfectly every time.

We strongly recommend working through them with dry-fire practice. Dry-fire is an excellent way to work through the mechanics of running the gun without needing to shoot ammo or travel to a range. Triple check that your weapon is unloaded and all ammunition is in another room prior to beginning. Then it's a matter of working through the skills above. Be honest with where your sights are when starting to pull the trigger and where the sights end up when the trigger breaks. A red dot on the pistol makes this a little easier, but you can do it with irons too.

Live-fire range sessions should then be used to validate the skill sets practiced during dry-fire and to work on skills such as recoil management and shooting extended strings which aren't completely possible in dry-fire.

The other key to mastering hard skills is approaching each repetition with focus and discipline. Recognize sloppy reps and work to minimize them occurring.

“The primary thing when you take a sword in your hands is your intention to cut the enemy, whatever the means. Whenever you parry, hit, spring, strike or touch the enemy's cutting sword, you must cut the enemy in the same movement. It is essential to attain this. If you think only of hitting, springing, striking or touching the enemy, you will not be able actually to cut him.” wrote Miyamoto Musashi in The Book of Five Rings.

Intentional practice in this manner provides the brain and body access to the hard skills it needs because the brain and body won't know another way. At this point, the proper technique is executed "automagically".
