UPCOMING DATES TO REMEMBER!

THIS FRIDAY April 29th - 12:30 - EARLY RELEASE

May 12th - Kindergarten Registration

May 13th - Fun Run!

June 8th - 12:30 -  LAST DAY OF SCHOOL AND EARLY RELEASE!
A NOTE FROM YOUR PRINCIPAL MRS. SPECHT

Dear Glen Arden Families,

As the end of the school seems to be near, children sometimes lose their focus on why they are at school.  Please help our children remember that every day is important.  We have only given 180 days to make a difference with your child, in preparing them for the future, and to making sure that they receive the education they deserve.

We all know that students get sick and have to stay home - that can not be helped.  Please remember that a child who comes to school overly tired and/or unprepared is not completely here.  He or she may not be able to concentrate or understand what the teacher has prepared to be taught for the day.

When we returned from Spring Break there were 45 days remaining in the school year, one-fourth of the instructional days.  The weather is warmer and the days are longer ~ children often think the school year is "almost over" when in reality we are only three-fourths of the way done.  So much learning can take place in 45 days.  As you are reading this we still have 30 instructional days left for this year, EVERY DAY MATTERS.  Please reinforce with our students that we can not coast to the end, but we need to FINISH STRONG.

We have not reached the end of the school year yet - we have a lot of work left to do and this is an extremely important time of the year to be prepared and focused every day.  If we do not take the end of the year as seriously as we do the rest of the year, then over the course of 5 years - the amount of time your child would be at Glen Arden - he or she could miss more than one entire year of learning.

Please continue providing the support you have been doing - reading with your child, getting him or her to bed on time, and getting to school prepared and ready to learn.

Your child is our greatest resource and we need to make sure that we do the best we can for every child, every day.

 Thank you,
 Mrs. Specht

Counselor Corner:

Mrs. Specht and I attended the “Safe Schools Symposium last week and picked up some important information on keeping our children safe from cyber threats.  Keith Deltano, our key note speaker, shared some strategies, but the key thing he shared is the importance of having filters on your child’s access to technology.  There are many choices, most at a minimal cost.  Here are some he shared:

www.uknowkids.com – An all in one service that monitors just about every social media platform and reports to you via instant emails.  Provides a dashboard that allows you to track nearly everything your child does on online.
www.netnanny.com –Another all in one service that helps parents monitor online behaviors.  One of the most powerful internet filters on the market.

He has a great website that has some amazing resources, www.Don’tBullyOnline.com. We’d like to think our precious children would be too young to be concerned with these types of threats, but experience tells me it is never too early to implement safe practices.  The dangers are very real and can cause serious damage.

Mr. Eden and I engaged all Glen Arden students in lessons regarding bullying last fall that included the definition of bullying and ways to respond, RECOGNIZE, REPORT, REFUSE.
The definition of "Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school-aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. ...
In order to be considered bullying, the behavior must be aggressive and include:
  • An Imbalance of Power: Kids who bully use their power—such as physical strength, access to embarrassing information, or popularity—to control or harm others. Power imbalances can change over time and in different situations, even if they involve the same people.
  • Repetition: Bullying behaviors happen more than once or have the potential to happen more than once.
Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose."

Please let us know if you have questions or concerns regarding bullying.

Family Group Night allows each family member to attend a group that addresses their needs! Children with special needs often have difficulty finding a group they can fit into. The Family Group Night's are designed for children with special needs and their siblings to connect with peers in their community. No matter what challenge your child faces, we believe they have gifts that they can share with others in the group they attend. We encourage families in surrounding counties to join us! Please RSVP! Signing up helps insure enough food for dinner and volunteers for groups.
