A NOTE FROM YOUR PRINCIPAL MRS. SPECHT

Dear Glen Arden Families,

It has been great to welcome back all the students and staff this week.  I hope that all of you were able to have an enjoyable holiday with plenty of family time as well as rest.  We received 10 new students this week along with a few staff changes due to mid-year retirements so in addition to getting to see everyone come back, we are welcoming some new faces as well.

There are a few things I want to remind you about, now that winter has arrived you need to be sure to check WLOS for any delays or cancellation..  Remember, there may not be snow on the ground in Arden but we can still have issues with the roads.

For those of you who pick your children up in the afternoon, please be sure to have your car rider sign displayed in car line so that you do not have to come in to the office to show ID.  As part of the safe schools program we need to do this to ensure students are going home correctly.

Thank you for continuing to send your children to school well rested and prepared for school.  We have more than half of the school year remaining so we need to make sure that all our students stay strong and focused on doing their best everyday.

Kristina Specht
Principal

Counselor Corner:

Happy New Year!  I'm looking forward to a fabulous 2016 here at Glen Arden.  I wanted to share my excitement over our student's response to my Random Acts of Kindness lesson in December.  In 1st - 3rd grade, well over eighty students completed the challenge and will be participating in "Secret Missions" to spread kindness.  Today, our first "Secret Agents" were presented with their missions. I'm including a sample mission to illustrate what our students will be doing.  I hope you will encourage your child, whether officially in the "Kind Club" or not, to look for ways to show kindness to others.

KIND CLUB MISSION POSSIBLE
Secret Service Challenge
Secret Agent;
Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to SHOW KINDNESS TO OTHERS SECRETLY.  For the next five days, you will choose to complete one act of kindness for a person of your choice each day, without telling the person you are doing this as a mission.
Step 1:  Pick the person you want to help or show kindness.
Step 2:  Watch to see what would make that person’s day better.
Step 3:  Choose one of the possible Random Acts of Kindness.
Step 4:  Do the act of kindness for that person without taking credit.

Day:                  Who did you help?                           What did you do?

Monday
Tuesday
Wednesday
Thursday
Friday

Secret Service Ideas:
Do a chore for a brother or sister
Write a note to someone telling them how much you appreciate them
Smile at three people today to make their day better
Secretly clean out mom or dad’s car
Ask your parents what you can do to help them today
Write a note to a teacher telling them what they do that appreciate
Pick up trash you see lying on the ground for a whole day
Do your homework without being asked
Help set the table for dinner
Sit with someone who seems lonely
Clean your room without being asked
Share a pencil with someone who needs one
Speak kindly all day long
Compliment someone
Leave a “Happy Note” for someone
Invite someone to play on the playground
Tell the principal how great your teacher is
Push in someone’s chair for them
Clean up after yourself and others in classes

Another exciting idea has stemmed from these lessons on kindness. One student mentioned to me on the playground, that "no one wanted to play with him". After talking a while, we came up with the idea of creating a "Buddy Bench". Students who need a friend, could sit on the bench. Our "Kind Club" members would then invite them to join them in whatever activity they were doing. If you have ideas or resources that could help us create this bench, please contact me (beth.lindsey@bcsemail.org). We're hoping to make this a colorful inviting space for all.
A NOTE FROM YOUR GLEN ARDEN SOCIAL WORKER MR. EDEN

Starting in January the students of Glen Arden will be working toward improving class attendance.  At the end of each month the class absences will be tallied up, and the class with the least absences for the entire month will earn a class reward.

If you would like to assist with the rewards or have any ideas please contact the school social worker Zachary Eden at 654-1800 or email Zachary at zachary.eden@bcsemail.org
